I very much enjoyed this adventure and it is well written. It is linear in layout, which is due to it being a true solo adventure.

This is actually an excellent Solo adventure. It is excellently written, the story is very interesting and thrilling, and the choose art is truly beautiful. I can't wait to play through the other parts of this series, there has been one thing which I found a tiny bit confusing however:

When you are required to make the Charisma (Persuasion) check on page 5, it is only explicitly stated that you gather your equipment if you fail the check but not if you succeed. It doesn't make much sense that you don't get your equipment back when you succeed the Charisma check, so I simply assumed that my character gathered her equipment anyway. Was my assumption correct?

Kind regards and keep up the fine work,

Milka

Mika, That's a good point! You should certainly get your gear upon a successful Charisma check. Sorry about that. Thanks for writing. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series. P.S. I'm currently getting part 5 into shape, so please keep your eyes peeled! I hope for it to be released this September.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this adventure. It was surprisingly good in so many ways. I was even surprised when it ended so quickly, but as I thought about it, it's exactly as long as a first level adventure should be. Two suggestions... SPOILER

  1. In the hermitage scene "The Trapdoor" there is a way to detect the trap, and a way to figure it out, but there's no way mentioned to disarm it unless you have thieves' tools. For clarification, maybe you could mention what happens if you try to disarm it WITHOUT thieves tools? Or, you could up the dexterity DC check 15 or 20 for PCs without thieves' tools as they are maybe trying to disarm it with a dagger or something. I just ended up rolling a 21 dexterity check and so went with the idea that the roll was high enough to forgo the thieves' tools.
  2. Will you be updating or editing the 1st adventure? If so, may I suggest you add the suggestions you put in the other three on how to adapt to 3, 4, or 5 players. I found that very helpful.

Anyway, aside from those suggestions, it was an EXCELLENT adventure. Perfect actually. Already purchased the next 3. I plan to replay the 1st adventure with my family next, using the flexible group rules.

Thanks!

Scott, Thanks so much for your review. I'm overjoyed that you had fun. I believe you're the first reviewer to mention your plan to expand to multi-player. Feel free to let me know how it went. As for your suggestions: I was tempted to make the trapdoor a flat Dexterity check, but wanted to give rouge's something special. That said, your point is well-taken. Regarding updating: it's something I'm eager to do, but time is against me. I hope to revisit all four of the adventurers and improve the errata as an inexpensive means of updating the products. Your feedback is most welcome. I hope you enjoy parts 2,3, and 4. My personal favourite is part 3 due to the unusual setting! I hope you and your family enjoy the game. Many thanks!

I thoroughly enjoyed the advernture, but some clarification is required...

My first run through was with 2 PCs... Bard Triton and a Druid Triton... doubling all encounters... this was comfortably challenging.

My second run through was using a single PC and it would have been deadly at almost every encounter except that my character was a Monk Wererat and immune to physical melee/ranged attacks.

Playing 2 PCs allows area of effect to assume a valuable role, increasing survivability.

I do not recommend running using a single PC.

Shipwrecked Part One is a relatively short solo adventure but it is excellently written and balanced and I really enjoyed it!

Shipwreck Part One bills itself as a 'narrative solo adventure' and that is an accurate description. As I mentioned before it's relatively short but there is a ton of space on every page given to description and flavour which in my mind makes this feel far more like a traditional D&D adventure than what is usually provided in a solo adventure. The adventure is entirely linear but I found the story more than engaging enough that I really didn't find it took anything away from the gaming experience. I also found most (almost all) of the encounters were appropriately challenging providing a legitimate threat to the PC while still offering a reasonable chance of success. The other positive I want to call out is that frequently short, low-cost adventures are lacking in terms of visual appeal; that is 100% not the case here, the adventure features maps for every encounter and art on every page. Another thing I'd like to note which is a personal issue for me is that as I like to continue using my characters from solo adventures in regular games I really like that this adventure has a level appropriate amount of treasure that wouldn't disrupt or unbalance any other game.

My only criticism of the adventure is that if you make the Saving Throw that kicks off the final encounter it makes the final boss fight a bit too easy which unfortunately makes it one of the least challenging encounters. The irony in my playthrough is that save was the only non-combat D20 roll I suceeded the whole adventure.

Overall I would HIGHLY recommend Shipwrecked! Part One, I had a lot of fun playing it and whatever your prefered style of solo adventure is there's no question in my mind you'll get more than $2 worth of play and enjoyment out of it.

I had great fun with this adventure! If you're familiar with D&D 5E and are looking for an attractive adventure with level-appropriate combat on nicely-presented maps and some reasonable rewards for the classic exploration and social skills, I don't think you'll go wrong here. If you're looking for a complicated flowchart with lots of side quests and non-combat player agency, you won't find it here, however.

This was just what I was looking for, and I happily bought parts 2 and 3.

Despite receiving a special thank you in this adventure, I had nothing to do with its creation. This is a great solo adventure and I believe that solo D&D, on the whole, is under-appreciated and this adventure ranks among some of my favorites. No prep work required. Grab your dice and a note pad and get going!

I've finally had a chance to run through this. It was shorter than I expected, but then I realized it was only 25 pages. There only so much adventure you can choose in that page count.

My dice were on fire, so I blew through the encounters. I'll have to go back an try again at some point, to sample the variety.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much. I recommend it. It captured the Al-Qadim flavor very well.

I just finished playing this, and unusual for my normal first run through a solo adventure, my PC survived. That's even with failing all the Investigation checks for finding useful things and all the Perception checks for every trap I encountered. Thankfully, the traps didn't kill me. Down to only 7 hp during the final combat, I finally had a good roll that ended things with a successful hit and full damage on the weapon roll.

The narrated ending produced an item I know my PC had not found, but given how poor his Perception rolls were, I figured he must have picked it up without even noticing it - totally in character - LOL.

That assumption in the narrative might be something that needs correcting, but I'm going to play this again, making other choices to see if that item is found elsewhere in the story.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this! From other reviews, I see you have produced other adventures. It's time for me to go looking for them.

Spoiler The item was the magical sea chart.

Spoiler Blaise - I went back and re-read the passage for Failure on page 11. It wasn't my PC's powers of observation, but my own memory and poor note-making during play at fault.

You did clearly state things to indicate the importance of the map/chart. I, however, only wrote down the result of my d100 roll, which resulted in finding the common texts. Comparable in relative importance to picking up a popular magazine at the drug store and forgetting that I picked up a prescription, too.

I have self-applied an idiot-slap. Thanks again for a delightful adventure!

Michael! Thanks for the review. Can you let me know what the object was that your character didn't find? :) Just write ***spoiler*** in your response and other will know to avoid reading it. Thank you!

Michael, it sounds like you had a great time. Thank you! And I see what you're referring to. I believe the words "map" and "chart" were used interchangeable in the text which could certainly lead to ambiguity. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I'll disambiguate this in the errata, and when time permits I'll adjust the text to avoid confusion. Thank you for your support and insight! Happy gaming.

Thanks for letting me know, Michael! Best wishes. And again - thank you for your support. It means a lot!

If you are looking to scratch the solo itch for D&D, this really well-written, beautiful, and imaginative product is for you!

I own many of Blaise's products, and I am never disappointed at his detail and ability to paint a picture. When I heard about the product, I was really curious how he pulled it off. I have to say, after a playthrough, he did it...

His characters are also always thoroughly developed, a quality I am intensely jealous about. ;)

I absolutely loved this adventure. I have always been a fan of solo games; this one is no exception. This story is well written, appropriately paced, and challenging enough to not feel overwhelming for a single Level 1 character. On top of that, the art is incredible and it is a quick adventure. I played through with three different characters(Barbarian, Sorcerer, and Paladin). Running through the adventure took me about 35-50 minutes. I have been waiting for a fun maritime adventure; this is it!

My wife and I played through this together, using the adjustments in the book for two players. It made for a very entertaining evening, taking about 2 1/2 hours to complete. The combat encounters were challenging but not overly deadly, but some of the skill challenges had us sweating. I would say that when I run this solo with just one character it will prove much more difficult. I can't remember running into any grammatical mistakes, very well edited. It had a very fantastical feel, if that makes any sense, and we both enjoyed it immensely. We highly recommend it as a starting point for both a solo or duet campaign, it is well worth the price.
