I ran this one as-written, with no modifications, and I should have changed it. This adventure has a huge deficiency - a plot hole the size of the bus. In brief:

  • The party is supposed to infiltrate a guarded location to locate a "macguffin".
  • Without giving too much away, the macguffin is directly tied to a person at the location.
  • The person does not, however, live at the location - presumably, the person leaves the location at night and goes home (the location has no living quarters suitable for all the people there).
  • The problem should be obvious: why in the world would the adventurers go to the trouble of entering a secure location to get the macguffin when they could just approach once out in the open streets?!

The fact that the adventure never accounts for this or addresses it is the adventure's greatest weakness. Either the macguffin should live at the place, be escorted under armed guard to a secure house which is harder to infiltrate, or characters should otherwise be given some other reason to enter this place and get the macguffin out. As-is, my players cased the joint, realized this flaw, and obtained the primary objective without much fuss.

The combat at the end is really well-balanced, and that provided a lot of fun for the characters - there's where the adventure got back on track. But the rest of it was kind of short-circuited due to the massive flaw in the setup. Makes me kind of wonder if this thing was ever really playtested with a cunning and inventive group of players. This one needs some serious adjustment to go well, which kind of defeats the purpose of buying a pre-made adventure.

I enjoyed the adventure, and I enjoyed running it...but I wish I hadn't allowed two of my players to play warforged. Haha, it totally broke my game. Still, overall the players seemed to have fun.

Loving the ELW storyline. Still being T1 the combat was mostly pretty easy, but still had a couple foes that presented a challenge without overdoing it too much. The final fight had some kick, but the players had enough firepower to make the fight fun (and the chance to use some of their firepower for once)

I enjoyed running this module. The group didn't go for the combat option (Having a changeling helped) but definietly got slammed in the final combat. The fact that a lot of the infiltration relied on dice roll luck was a little concerning. Overall a good module but helped by the right sort of characters to carry it out.

(It would have been interesting to outline the researchers responses to an active warforged)

Clearly the Eberron mods aren't designed for the standard dungeon bashers... which is great.

I really enjoyed this one, and my players are now wiser in regards to getting bonus objectives. The combats are fun, and less reliance on combat and pushing for more roleplay moments really makes this series of modules stand out better from some older ones which needed to rely on combat for levelling.

And by now, if your halflings aren't all called Bruce, have heavy thick Australian accents, eat Talenta Polenta, and often get mistaken for Boromir, then you musn't be playing it right.

This adventure doesn't fit the new AL format very well. Prior adventures treat the bonus objectives as optional, additional scenes to extend the running time, but in this adventure they can't really be separated from the main plot. I don't know how you would run this in a 2-hour block.

The party is asked to acquire the chief artificer's ID and papers in the intro handout, but doing so is considered a bonus objective. (Why do they have to kill him? Incapacitating him isn't an option?) The second bonus objective is simply "infiltrate the facility and escape without the alarm being raised", but Episode Three seems to take for granted that reinforcements are called, meaning that they fail to get the second bonus? If the chief artificer isn't alerted or is taken out so he can't sound the alarm, what is there to do in Episode Three?

It's disappointing that the main path through the adventure works best if your party doesn't have any of the races that are unique to Eberron. A changeling can pass, of course, but there aren't even any options suggested for warforged characters.

If the characters are more than a level or two apart, some of the encounters can be really hard to scale. The hobgoblin devastator can take a low-APL group apart all by herself, as can the medusa, and both of them have reinforcements. I don't know how an APL 1 party would survive this adventure as written if their cover gets blown.

I did like the setup for the adventure, and the twist that results from it.
