When my group decided they wanted to play a Transformers game I was concerned about how I would run such a game. I considered some other systems but felt they were too generic.

I was directed to this system and paid the price to dive in. What I found was a system that I felt very competently captured the game we wanted to play.

Character creation was fairly fun and sparked the imagination. The rules for the Mechamorphs were appropriate and adequate.

I have two main criticisms however. The scales often confused my players when we would switch from one to another. Also the lack of feats tended to make most characters alike.

Overall I found this worth the $14.95 I paid for it. Not without flaws and could do with a 2nd edition, but still a solid game that I'm sure I'll be using for some time.

Not to bad of a game the way they have it layed out right now, but it does need some work to make it a lot better of a game and to fix some of the problems that are in it right now.

The best way to put it for came from an earlier review by Chris Talbot "Instead of recreating the larger-than-life style of Transformers, the system is highly lethal to characters." Had a big problem with this in one of my groups, till we started making our own house rules and that helped fix a lot of the problems.

It could have been done with more information in it as another review pointed out. It needed the info if you wanted to include some of the NPCs into your campains. All in all a good try at a working game. I would have taken it back to the reviewing section before I released it in the shape it is in personally though. There it would have been worked on for a month or two more before I released it.

The art work was really good, can't complain there in the least bit.

I have played better mecha games out there, RIFTS Robotech and R. Talsorian Mechton Zeta series to name my favorites.

While Mechamorphosis is a half-decent attempt at recreating the style and stories behind the various series of Transformers cartoons, the system truly suffers under the d20/OGL licence. Instead of recreating the larger-than-life style of Transformers, the system is highly lethal to characters. Additionally, the rules for creating 'morphs are awkward.

Simply put: Mechamorphosis could do with some official errata. But even thent, I think potential players and GMs would be better to take the concept and port it to a more cinematic or cartoon-inspired game system.

However, mechanics aside, the setting details are quite interesting. The authors took the Transformers setting and gave it their own tweaks. And it leaves enough plot hooks and unanswered questions for several adventures worth of gaming.

The best Transformers-like incarnation by far, it features gorgeous art, well thought and complete rules mechanisms for all imaginable character types, and is a fun read. Excellent added value product.

The only regrets are:

  • it requires the basic D20 rules.
  • it is only 64 pages long and would have deserved a longer treatment;
  • conversion mechanisms for non-mechamorphs are a bit awkward;
  • no stats for featured NPCs
  • more background would have been great, though the 7 pages of it are very good.
