OWB001: WWII: Operation WhiteBox
Publisher: Small Niche Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]

The WW2 OSR

Roll your classic 6 attributes, select your nationality, profession (before the war), and class (during the war) and you're ready to go!

Includes a wealth of detail on the war itself (including a detailed timeline) and many ways to play. From frontline soliders to commandoes to spies to tank commanders. As well as Nazi Superscience, the Nazi Occult, and Space Wars campaign modes to inject some scifi and fantasy into the game if you desire (totally optional but well detailed)

I can't recommend this product highly enough to anyone wishing to play a WW2 campaign, or play out a military conflict in a similar era.

Excellent art throughout

High Stakes - FREE storytelling and adventure rules
Publisher: Ganesha Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/05/2018 13:18:25

A narrative storytelling game which makes it impossible to get into character or becomes immersed in the reality of the world. You are firmly a narrator here, not a character. You are firmly a story-planner here, not a spectator to events unfolding naturally. This is not an RPG. It's a shared storytelling game.

Cortex Classic System Role Playing Game
Publisher: Margaret Weis Productions
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/05/2018 13:15:14

A solid if unremarkable universal RPG. Everything here works just fine. Everything here has also been done better somewhere else. Each vital play area is touched on in some detail. But every area could also use a bit more detail in my opinion, at least if the product wanted to stand out from the large glut of competitors doing basically the same thing (BRP, GURPS, Savage worlds, chronicles of darkness, cypher system, genesys, etc.)

This product seems destined to be lost in the shuffle. But I doubt anyone will be truly disappointed with the product. It does what it sets out to do in barebones fashion and with respectable execution.

Achtung! Cthulhu: Guide to the Pacific Front
Publisher: Modiphius
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/05/2018 13:11:27

After reading 'Shadows of Atlantis' the bar was set very high for this lineup. In 'Guide to the Pacific Front' I didn't find what I was hoping for.

Shadows of Atlantis was a period piece. Guide to the Pacific Front is a genre piece. If you're looking for military adventures in the Pacific theater of war this is for you. If you're hoping to explore wartorn China, and Southeast Asia and have espionage and investigative based adventures, like I was, then this product doesn't offer much.

The only area written up in any detail is Japan, and even there it's mostly focused on the war rather than the culture. There are a few mythos conspiracies, threats, and adventures, but the 'main event' is clearly the breakdown of mission types and Pacific-Theatre timeline.

Not a bad product per se, but a very focused one.

Blood and Bone - Campaign Setting
Publisher: Arcana Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/01/2018 07:12:31

Lots of good stuff, lots of bad stuff. It pretty much balances out to an average product.

Multiple well-detailed cultures are included, but they're all tied to a unified cosmology which, unfortunately, is not as well written as any of the individual cultures. So each culture has at least a small element of bad writing attached. If you can take the time to remove the cosmology and rewrite it this product will appeal to you more, the cultures themselves are pretty strong.

The art is excellent throughout, full colour paintings of the highest quality.

Atlas of Mythika: The Untamed North (Mazes & Minotaurs)
Publisher: Legrand Games Studio
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/31/2018 04:23:12

MNM displays their version of Celtic, and Nordic cultures here as well as more details on Centaurs and Amazons. Not as lengthy as I might have liked, but still packed with evocative ideas and great setting details.

I strongly recommend this product. You could easily use it to run Viking and Celtic campaigns without ever heading down to the Minean nations

The MNM version of Ancient Egypt.

Here is everything you need to run an entire Egyptian style campaign. From excellent and detailed descriptions of the setting, to strong supporting rules and rules expansions.

I cannot recommend this product more strongly

Mazes & Minotaurs Players Manual
Publisher: Legrand Games Studio
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/31/2018 04:17:23

If Gygax and Arneson had been inspired by Greek Myth rather than Lord of the Rings this is what we would have gotten instead of DND

An excellent product with a variety of races (Amazons, Centaurs, and Nymphs) and classes (Barbarians, Nobles, Spearmen, Thieves, Hunters, Priests, and Sorcerers) to choose from

One of the strongest magic systems in any product I've seen.

The basic rules are all there, but nothing spectacular (aside from the Magic system), and the prose style is a charming semi-parody of DND and OSRs in general

I can't recommend this strongly enough

An elegant blend of the BOL engine and the d20 engine. This is possibly the best d20 system ever written. A 'must buy' product in my opinion

A generic 'kitchen sink' cyberpunk setting. Cybernetics, hacking rules, psionics, cloning, genetic engineering, AIs... it's all there. As well as a ton of detail on this alternate timeline and 'near future' setting. Nothing revolutionary, but very solid and well written.

A very strong 'How to GM Space Opera' section with several example campaign modes

Stars Without Number: Original Core Edition
Publisher: Sine Nomine Publishing
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2018 00:33:28

Stars Without Number is a great accomplishment. Not just for an OSR, but for any RPG.

3 classes (Warrior, Psychic, Expert) supplemented by training and background packages (1 of each) to produce varied characters.

A strong selection of scifi gear and ships. With solid subsystems for customizing your own starship.

The mechanics are a bit clunky by modern standards but smooth by OSR standards. Very playable.

The setting is intriguing but minimal. A galaxy emerging from a dark age. A second chance to create a human Imperium among the stars.

Sector, Planet, Faction, Adventure, and Alien creation subsystems. A wonderful toolbox to build almost anything a GM might need.

A small bestiary and example sector.

A really excellent 'How to GM' section focusing on Sandbox Style play.

Black and white art throughout, very high quality. The PDF is bookmarked.
