Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 300+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Below is a short description of what you will find within each part of the book.

Changelog

Version 1.1, 14th of June, 2019. Added the shadevar, tzitzimitl, vadataj, and Koschei. Many small corrections and balance fixes based on our surveys. Thank you all for your input. Also added a separate pdf containing the character options, and included virtual table-top tokens in the Handouts.zip file.

Version 2.0, 15th of July, 2020. Increased font size and redone entire layout (increasing the book from 260 pages to 350 pages), fixed typos, revised flavor text, many tweaks to various mechanics.

Version 3.0, 12th of October, 2021. Revised various descriptions, subclasses, and stat blocks, added the beluatans, removed Har'Akir, and, at long last, added print-on-demand support.
The Shadowfell
  • In-world introductions to various locales by Ulraunt, designed to inspire and create story hooks.
  • Details on three prominent Shadowfell locations
    • Gloomwrought: An ever-changing and seemingly living city, characterized by numerous factions that scheme for supremacy, all ruled by an undying prince.
    • Evernight: A grotesque Shadowfell reflection of the city of Neverwinter, where the living are nothing but food and playthings for the undead that rule supreme.
    • Thultanthar: A floating city that was thought destroyed and now the only remnant of the long-lost Netherese empire, ruled by a shadowy magocracy to this day.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
    • The Burning Peaks: A volcano-filled domain which once held two infamous Darklords destined to be eternally at odds with each other, both of which have since escaped.
    • Har'Akir: A desert domain where the environment itself and the baking sun is as likely to kill an adventurer as the mummified Darklord.
    • Markovia: An island of horrible hybrid creatures and a Darklord who likes to... experiment.
    • Monadhan: A jungle domain of betrayal weighed down by the neverending suffering of its draconic Darklord.
    • Sunderheart: An urban domain of debauchery, duality, and unattainable satisfaction, ruled over by a pair of Darklords which are simultaneously each their own and a single entity.

The Fugue Plane
  • An introduction to the nature of deathjudgment, and the afterlife in the Forgotten Realms, as well as the politics involved between gods and fiends.
  • We explore the City of Judgment, surrounded by the Wall of the Faithless and the Crystal Spire, where the dead are judged, at its center.
Deities and Other Powers
  • We explore 5 deities, including Jergal, Kelemvor, Mask, Shar, and Vecna.
  • Each deity includes nifty tips for roleplaying them, mighty stat blocks, awe-inspiring lairs, and templates for creating versatile avatars.
  • We also uncover truths about 2 elder evils, namely Dendar the Night Serpent and Kezef the Chaos Hound.
Character Options
  • Four new and thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen new and unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world and beyond.
Bestiary
  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • Eight unique characters from the Forgotten Realms or Ravenloft, such as the infamous Kas, the Destroyer and the shadowy Erevis Cale, Chosen of Mask.

Amazing, amazing supplement. Flavourful classes, cool themes, excellent encounter tables; above all else the team of Quill and Cauldron excels in balancing; their solo works thus far singlehandedly have the best mechanical interpretations of high and even low level play for DMs and Players alike.

What I do have to ask after a few years of waiting, is whether or not future updates are planned for the UGttP series ~ Expanding on Planes such as The Abyss, Limbo, Feywild or The Nine Hells would be absolutely amazing, although really any of the planes would prove to be an insanely interesting read. Hell, even things along the lines of the Elemental Chaos are on the table; with so many gods and even elder evils statted now, it may be of interest to stat some primordials ;)

I absolutly love this book! Ever think of turning this and others into Roll20 content? This would be AMAZING to just click and drag into a game vs building it by hand!!!

Recently bought the PDF version. Great book. However the bookmarks appear to be all messed up. There are two sets of bookmarks, duplicates for the most except for a few cases. Some bookmarks don't appear to be working.

Spell design question: Why is Grace of the Masked Lord a spell with a Range of 20 feet, and not a spell with a Range of Self? There is nothing in the spell to indicate a distance at all, and in fact, the spell's description states that the spell targets you.

Found another error. Shadow Binding is 5th level, but its At Higher Levels section refers to it as 4th level, and upcasting it to 5th level or above. What level is this spell?

I have the Acheron hardcover and the Shadowfell pdf. I just received the hardcover of the Shadowfell and couldn't be more pleased. It's a plane that's had my keen interest since 2e and I feel it's an important addition to my collection. Thank you for a great product.

I've had this book on my wishlist for a while and I thought today would finally the day to buy it in PDF+Print. However, when I scoured the sample pages a final time I noticed consistent grammar and punctuation issues throughout the text.

I'm sure these issues will be below the threshold of notice for the majority of readers! However, if you're the sort of reader who is as easily distracted by poorly-edited text as I am, I suggest you give the sample pages a close read before purchasing.

I might have missed the reason but why was Har'Akir removed? Also because Har'Akir was removed your book marks are out of wack they do not take me to were they say they are taking me. Chapter 15 Backgrounds puts me in Chapter 15 Spells. Thought you might want ot know.

You should have Grim Press to convert them into Fantasy Grounds for this game to be played on Virtual Tabletop. https://grimpress.net/ Just contacted them by email or their Discord to begin Conversion of your PDF file to FG Unity.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
