Call of Cthulhu: Arkham
Publisher: Chaosium
by Jacob [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/26/2024 09:00:13

This is a very solid rework of the old Arkham books. If you have the old book, this is an updated version of that, with the goal of not straying outside of the area those books were covering.

If you don't have the old book, and you're interested in Arkham, this book is great! The only downside is it doesn't include the adventures of the prior edition, but it uses that space to make Arkham itself more gamable.

It's a fantastic megadungeon! My only beef is the lack of bookmarks in the PDF; I had to make my own as I read, which made it hard to find stuff I hadn't read yet. But the content itself is amazing; the Barrows almost run themselves

It really is the simplest Stranger Thing style RPG to jump in and play. I played at my local gaming store then went home and bought it. Just ran it last night. It's a blast!

Barons of Braunstein
Publisher: Olde House Rules
by Jacob H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/17/2020 18:18:55

A fine small ruleset for standard historical adventures in the Middle Ages. It just has almost nothing to do with the Braunstein of its namesake.

There's one page suggesting you could play a Braunstein with these rules, but you're better off googling "how to run a Braunstein" for any actual guidance.

TLDR: A nice ruleset for historical fiction, but has as much to do with Braunstein as D&D.

Boot Hill Wild West Role-Playing Game (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Jacob H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/20/2019 00:06:13

This is an entirely different game from Boot Hill Third edition. This has the best Wild West combat I've ever encountered; it's very deadly. An example: To attack, I have a percent chance I need to roll under to hit. If I hit, I roll on the Wound chart twice; once to see what body part got hit, another to see how bad it is. Regardless of your level, an unlucky hit can kill you instantly.

The rulebook assumes you'll be playing a game similar to the old Braunstein games of yesteryear. Everyone creates a character who has a role in the town/terrority; Texas Ranger, Sheriff, Marshell, Indian Chief, Railroad Boss, Newspaper Owner, Outlaw Gang leader, drifter, etc. Everyone is viaing to make such and such amount of money, and the referee just moderates the chaos.

This blog post here has a description of one Game Master's experience with Boot Hill 2nd Edition. http://www.chocolatehammer.org/?p=5773

Tunnels & Trolls Free Rulebook
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by Jacob H. [Verified Purchaser]

I played Buffalo Castle and a few other solos with this when I was a young teen. It's a beautiful game, with just the right tone to encourage you to keep it fluid and fun.

I couldn't find my actual character, but here's a pretty close approximation of my most common character; (I always made a new one when they died in a solo, so they had short lives)

Combat in T&T is fun; I was skeptical, thinking it'd be lame with all those d6s, but there's something awesome about rolling a handful of them and rushing to see whether you or the monster rolled higher.

The Vigilante Hack
Publisher: Bloat Games
by Jacob H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/16/2019 20:08:20

To my shame, I still haven't run this game yet, though I've read it several times. Looks perfect for Daredevil/Punisher/Arrow style vigilante adventuring, with maybe a smidge of Dirty Harry or Death Wish.

I highly recommend doing a Google search for "Vigilante Class Hack," a fan supplement that reworks the classes into 21 different ones.
