Night Below: An Underdark Campaign (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/16/2020 15:58:39

One of my all-time favourite campaigns. Night Below terrorized sixteen of my friends for a year of high school, introducing them to the concept of a dungeon crawl and acting as a brutal introduction to the world of the Underdark.

Divided into three separate books with distinctive feels, there's a little something for everybody in this epic adventure. The first book, Evils of Haranshire has elements of hex crawl as the party is introduced to the mysterious plot to kidnap magic users. There is plenty of space here for the DM to flesh things out with their own encounters, as well as plenty of suggested side quests to get the party on level for their assault on the bandit camp.

Book two, Perils of the Underdark, is a long string of Underdark encounters that range from ho-hum to absolutely brutal. I think we lost about 20-30 PCs in this section of things. It is a little bit too hack and slash without many opportunities for roleplay or especially interesting encounters, bit it does a good job of getting the players prepared for their eventual assault on the Sunless Sea in book three.

Sadly, my party all graduated before we got a chance to confront the Aboleths and put an end to their plotting, but the adventure remains a favourite of mine.

Last Stand: A Worthy Death
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/16/2020 15:55:16

This was a really fun supplement to make use of in my recent Tomb of Annihilation campaign, with the ability to make one last, heroic effort making the many character deaths seem a little more 'worth it'. While it might be unbalanced in a regular game, it's a terrific addition to an old-fashioned dungeon crawl or a high level campaign.

5MWD Presents: Expanded Wand of Wonder
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:59:15

The Wand of Wonder is one of my favourite magic items in D&D, so I always search out expanded tables for its weirdness whenever a player stumbles across it. This is one of the best organised tables I've come across in my times - with a variety of effects ranging from amusing to absolutely devastating.

A fun addition to any game that might feature this most legendary of artifacts, this simple supplement includes well-balanced rules on how you can include the Rod of Seven Parts in your game.

If you're looking to resurrect the classic module of the same name, this would be a good starting point.

Critter Compendium
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:57:22

If you don't already own the Critter Compendium - you really should. While it doesn't necessarily add new imagery or creatures to the game, it does a great job of resurrecting and reinventing classic foes ranging from the Allip to the Mimics to Xill.

There are over 250 creatures presented in the manual, most of which players of 2nd or 3rd edition will immediately recognise.

The Mines of Chult
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:53:58

Another fantastic supplement for those running Tomb of Annihilation, Mines of Chult provides nine pre-designed minor dungeons (all themed around mines) that you can seamlessly insert into your ongoing Tomb of Annihilation game.

The majority of these dungeons are for Tier 1 and Tier 2 adventurers, with one designed for adventurers who have already conquered the Tomb of the Nine Gods and are looking for an additional challenge.

Each of these mini-adventures comes with options for scaling them up (or down), so you've got a lot of flexibility as to which ones you would like to run. While some definitely fit into the setting more effortlessly than others, all should be fun side-quests to keep your party from getting burned out on the hex crawl.

Tomb of Annihilation Companion
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:51:31

Another invaluable resource for DMs running Tomb of Annihilation, the Companion provides additional or variant rules for a number of elements that Tomb of Annihilation perhaps did not do justice to.

From more detailed dinosaur racing rules to 30-days of pre-designed jungle traveling to some reworked encounters for the Tomb of the Nine Gods itself, this is a must-have if you felt that certain areas of the module as published didn't quite live up to expectations.

Encounters in the Savage Jungles
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:50:20

This is a must-have for anybody running Tomb of Annihilation or another jungle setting. While the encounter tables provided in the base module are decent, these more fleshed out and story-driven encounters provide plenty of fun side-adventures to take your party on when they're sick of fighting the same old zombies, Yuan-Ti, and dinosaur fodder.

Written by a collection of DM's Guild contributors, the quality and tone vary quite greatly from encounter to encounter. Some are dark and story-driven, some offer some fun roleplay (such as the Lost Treasure Hunter), and some are downright silly (looking at you, It's Daddy Time!)

Regardless of which ones you choose to run, you're provided with 23 fully fleshed out encounters, 15 simpler encounters you can flesh out for yourself, and rules for the new creatures and items introduced. It's a fantastic resource sure to save you a lot of prep time in the lead-up to your next session.

Racial Archetypes (40 New Archetypes For All Classes And Races)
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:46:37

The scope of this supplement is quite impressive, introducing a number of racial archetypes for all of the Forgotten Realms races. Rules are also included for opening these racial archetypes up for players of other races who might want to experiment.

I didn't feel that any of these archetypes necessarily jumped out as particularly fun to play, but I do like that they are characterfully woven into the race that inspired them.

the Sterling Vermin Adventuring Co. Anthology
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:45:25

This is a must have for anybody looking to expand their game beyond the scope of the standard books. The Pugilist and Magi classes alone are worth the price tag, with both being very well balanced and flavourful additions to the game.

The supplement also contains four well-developed and fleshed out races (all of which can slot seamlessly into the Forgotten Realms), expanded rules for playing as a vampire (through the innovative use of a prestige class), and a collection of new spells, items, and foes based around the included Magi and Pugilist classes.

This is one of my favourite purchases on DM's Guild. It adds so much to the game.

A great collection of additional backgrounds to supplement those found in the standard books. While the formatting and lack of artwork is a bit of a let down, you can't fault the quality of the written content or the price tag.

My players are enjoying having a few extra options to choose from.

Race Compendium - Volume One
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2019 18:41:49

The Race Compendium is a terrific resource, with some truly fun new races for your players to enjoy. I'm particularly fond of the Mul and Revenant rules, with the Hengeyokai also being well done. Were I not using the Hengeyokai presented in Heroes of the Orient, this would be my second choice.

The addition of some characterful racial feats and race inspired spells rounds it all out nicely. A good addition to any DM's collection.

Rappan Athuk Expansion: Volume 1 (PF)
Publisher: Frog God Games
by C M W B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/12/2019 13:55:57

What more needs to be said about the greatness of Rappan Athuk?

I own it in 3.5, Pathfinder, and 5th Edition now, with the latter products now including the products being reviewed here.

While I've not had the chance to run all of the new additions to the Dungeon of Graves, I can say that a few of the new additions (such as Castle Calaelan and the Tunnels of Terror) are fantastic additions that allow your lower level PCs a taste of what lurks beneath without necessarily being fed directly into the meatgrinder.

Regardless of the level, everything added feels like it fits seamlessly into the overarching lore and sense of impending doom that pervades Rappan Athuk. If you're running the game in this edition, these are an invaluable way to extend the game to include lower levels while also adding in some nasty surprises for your higher level team.
