This was one of the first modules I ever ran for a group of people who had never played D&D before. It's roleplay heavy, with a variety of combat and exploration. A great introduction to the game.

There was some back research that I had to do because I ran this first, but that was my choice. Between this module and others in the series, some NPCs change race/gender, but it's easy enough to gloss over.

An excellent module with plenty of RP fun, a hunt, a few exciting encounters with hostiles. Quite a bit of material to digest, but if you know it well, it flows wonderfully.

This was actually the first Adventurers League module I ran as a DM, and I had a great time with it. The adventure revolves around some mysterious thefts that the PCs are expected to track down. While doing so they meet a number of interesting personalities around the city of Phlan, giving plenty of chances for fun roleplaying, and they naturally get into a few scrapes, letting the combat fans flex their muscles. The conclusion is something of a mini-dungeon crawl that culminates in a showdown with the culprit behind the whole thing.

The first part of the adventure can grind along with roleplaying and, as the DM, you need to make sure you don't let the party get stuck/mired down with each part or the adventure will take way longer then it should. As others have said, it is a good way for newer players to learn resource management.

The Scroll Thief was… Okay. Straight forward for the most part. You talk to NPCs, you gather clues, you follow the clues, you ended up finding the big bad, you kill/capture/free him, the end. It’s not bad by any means, it’s just that nothing in particular stood out to me either.

Rewarding players with XP for the “secret” interaction with the NPCs is a nice touch, serves as an incentive for players to RP more. But the conversations could become drawn out and stagnant at some point, especially if your players aren’t the biggest fan of RP-ing. Being able to meet a dragon (albeit only a baby) was nice too, as this game is called Dungeons & “DRAGONS” after all. Headband of Intellect in a Tier 1 is also a good boon for the players (especially for those who like to min-max their characters and can use to headband to their advantage).

Overall, this module gave me quite a similar vibe with DDEX1-5 The Courting of Fire. Both modules are relatively linear and straight forward, but DDEX1-6 The Scroll Thief had a better execution.

As others have said, this module teaches players the important of pacing themselves! A lot of RP and investigation in the first half, with some really interesting combats in the second half. Not least of which is the characters' first encounter with a true dragon (if following these modules in order)!

I have played this module 4 times and DMed it twice. Lots of RP in the first half, and lots of combat in the second half. My experience is tha players tend to burn through resources (i.e. spell slots) WAY too fast, and this module teaches them to pace themselves. I had a total blast RPing the NPCs as a DM, and as a player, it was great to RP the module different ways without giving things away (player knowledge versus character knowledge). If your party is cruising along, just upscale the final fight and make them sweat!!! Probably my most favorite Season 1 adventure. Many other DMs fall back on this adventure when call to duty suddenly.

This module is light on combat, heavy on roleplay. Some of my players had a hard time staying involved, with the exception of the 'fight' in the training yard. Otherwise, it was a fairly decent module.

While the hooks for non-Zhentarim members are pretty weak, I think this module offers a unique experience without boring players.

PART 1: MYSTERIES IN METHOD- I think that for normal AL players (ie lack of roleplay density due to time contraints), the interaction with Knight Aleyd is unnecessary. "Local rumors" leading the players directly to Brandywine would probably do just as well. Love the investigatory-style section, questioning witnesses, gathering clues, etc., and the ambush alley is a decent enough fight.

PART 2: TRUTH IN TEXT- The main highlight is the cool "chase" through the Archives/sewer where the players slowly realize that they aren't too far behind their quarry.

PART 3: THE DRAGON'S SWAMP- It's really fun to have a real dragon fight in a T1 adventure! It is also nice to have a bad guy (Ellison) that the players can choose to spare/help.

Enjoyed this module a fair bit. Allowed the characters good opportunities to RP throughout the investigation as well as actually face a dragon at the end. Would definitely recommend.

My PCs enjoyed taking on the role of detective-adventurers as they grilled suspects and victims alike. Our Lords Alliance member offered a solution to keep the imposter in good standing in the faction by way of charity works along with hard work. The Order of the Gauntlet member gained some appreciation through his spar with the Fighting Arena owner's daughter. Everyone also enjoyed the chase and battles with the carrion crawler and the wormling at the end of the mod. Over all a good adventure.

One of my players described this as D&D meets Agatha Christie. Don't be afraid to skip forward a bit if things resolve that way - the adventure is half investigation, half chase scene (like all good mysteries!) Well done, lots of fun. We finished in a little over 3 hours, and my players enjoyed it thoroughly.

This one begins quite similarly to 1-5 The Courting of Fire. I suggest running 1-7 Drums in the Marsh between 1-5 and 1-6 to change the pace a little. (It would also provide some good foreshadowing of the fight at the end.)

Good RP and investigation opportunities. We had fun with the three theft victims. The fight with the fake welcomers would make more sense if your group includes a Zhentarim faction member. My group didn't have one, and then accused Cassra of the crime. Fortunately they didn't outright murder her before getting to the truth.

DM advice and spoilers: The quarreling with Master Opanrael about an appointment seems unnecessary and petty. Keep it if you have the time, but mostly it just wastes time and makes the players feel powerless. Maybe that's the point, that the heroes can slay dragons but not get an appointment with the scribe master?

Dragon fight! A battle with a dragon almost never happens in D&D anymore because it's so cliche. The lair actions can make or break the fight. Please do your players a service and play the dragon smart. A fight with a dragon should never be a cakewalk.

DDEX01-06 is one of the more well written mods from season 1. There is ample opportunity for RP as well as the obvious murderhobo fodder that most of AL includes. The Scroll Thief is much less linear and there is more room for the DM to run the mod as they please, with a good amount of guidance on how it is intended to be ran. I'd recommend this adventure as a DM and a player.
