This work dives straight in with an Introduction that provides an overview of the backstory and history of the game setting, with a sidebar that explains that it's based on the setting of Corvus Belli's miniatures skirmish game... which in its turn grew out of a role-playing game the four founders of the company had written and played at home! The whole thing is a space-opera of exploration, technological advancement - and of the fractures that have grown up between different groups.

There is a survey of the Human Sphere, with brief notes on the eleven habitable systems they have discovered via wormhole technology. It also speaks of various factions that have arisen, and there is mention of 'Code Infinity'. In a 12-point scale that tells you how close to disaster a particular situation has got, Code Infinity is when it has reached a state of multiple issues, the resolving of any one being likely to bring the whole situation down about your ears! Fortunately an organisation called Bureau Noir exists to cope with such situations. Whilst the game rules can be used to play literally anyone in any situation in known space, the default puts the player-characters as agents of Bureau Noir.

Despite its avowed role, Bureau Noir is as riven with factions as any other group and this leads to some interesting role-play if members of different factions are assigned to the same team. Of course, 'loyal' agents put the mission first... or the team might all owe allegience to the same faction and be working to further its ends even over the assigned task.

You might think that all this was enough, but there's more. A bunch called the Combined Army, a military force composed of several alien races that have been subjugated by the Evolved Intelligence, a malign (we think) AI that apparently has plans for Humanity that it hasn't yet shared, but probably do not have the happiness and wellbeing of human beings at its core. Two races from that army - the Morat and the Shasvastii - are introduced here. Occasionally there are references to things that aren't explained in this brief overview, but on the whole it gives a fair idea of the situation you're getting into.

Next, Chapter 2: Basic Rules explains what you need to know to play the game. Pre-generated characters are provided, so there are notes on what the various abilities and skills noted for each of them mean. There are six pre-gens. A note explains that when you get to make your own characters, a 'lifepath' system is used to determine not only what they know and can do, but how they learned this as well. For now though, there are details of task resolution and how the unique Heat and Momentum mechanics of the 2D20 system work. We find out how action scenes are played out and there's plenty about combat. It's a fairly breathless overview, but things should become clear once you start playing... even more so if someone (preferably the GM) is already familiar with the base game system.

Then comes Chapter 3: Paradiso Countdown - the actual introductory scenario. It all began when a large alien spacecraft suddenly arrived at the Human Sphere's seat of government, and this turned out to be a bunch of aliens who are not part of the Combined Army who were seeking an alliance against them. During the summit called to thrash out the details, the party are detailed to work security. Depending on their faction, they may also have a secondary task to accomplish. Within a couple of days, murders have taken place and the party is assigned to one of the alien ambassadors as their security detail. That's only the beginning of the problems...

There's background material for the GM explaining what exactly is going on and who's doing what, as well as a rundown on the aliens, the Tohaa. They do everything by threes... which gives them a quite different outlook from humanity's binary tendencies. There are also notes on human diplomats, the space station the summit is being held on, and the overall security operation.

This moves into a day-by-day breakdown of events. This is very clearly laid out and proves easy to run as everything is at your fingertips. It's still probably a good idea to read it over before you run the game, though. Interestingly, a sidebar notes that this is a cut-down version of a scenario in a forthcoming book, one that skips fairly quickly to a brawl as that's what most players want to try out in a new system! That said, if you are good at running encounters on the fly there is plenty for less-warlike members of the party to do.

It certainly makes for an exciting introduction to the game, one that makes me look forward to more!

Quick review. A little lack luster. Less emphasis on skills and social situations than even a lot of other barebones rpg's have. Might be more fun to run the miniatures game as an rpg with an alternate set of skills/stats for social situation. Not sure what there is offered in this rpg that's now wholly unique except the setting and the combat.

Full Disclosure - I have done freelance writing for Modiphius on the Infinity RPG

The Inifinity RPG uses the same universe and background as the tabletop miniatures game by Corvus Belli. The background is near future science fiction, with healthy doses of transhuman and anime influence. The universe was what initially drew me to the tabletop game - and it just screamed for an RPG. The background in the Quickstart gives you just a taste of the universe. Not really enough to give you a good impression of the depth of thought that Corvus Belli put into it for the miniatures game.

The game uses the 2d20 system, developed by Modiphius for a number of their other games, including Mutant Chronicles and the upcoming Conan RPG. The basic mechanic - called a test - is to roll 2d20 against a target of attribute plus skill. Difficulty is set by the number of successes needed for - erm - success. There are ways to roll more dice and to count each roll as more than one success, but more on that later. The important thing to know is that it plays quickly, lending itself more towards cinematic than crunchy.

There are two other in-game economies to consider: Momentum and Heat. Momentum is generated from "extra" successes above those needed for success, and can be spent on a variety of special effects on actions, or added to a group pool to be spent later. Some groups have reported issues with frivolous tests being used to stockpile Momentum - I have not, so this might be a function of GM style. Heat comes from players "buying" extra d20s for tests or from Momentum rolled by bad guys. The GM can use Heat for a variety of effects, like bumping NPCs up in the initiative order, triggering scenery effects, and other assorted mischief.

The scenario included in the pack is a solid instroduction to the universe and rules, though it starts a little slowly for my tastes. The pregenerated characters are likewise solid in abilities and background, even if a bit hackneyed for those already familiar with the universe. The PC sheets can be a bit hard to sort out, but in Modiphius' defense, they were done before all the rules were complete.

In short: a solid introduction to the background and game system - well worth checking out if you like the genre.

A great system, based on an amazing background! I enjoy the 2d20 mechanic, and the ease of play.

I found the Free Quickstart Preview of the "Infinity R.P.G." (developed by Modiphius Games, Great Britain, for a copyright patent of Corvus Belli, Spain) that was available from the Drivethru Site one of the More Beautiful (if not the MOST Useful, Entertaining, Interesting) products that were shared for review by the worldwide Gamers Community. I followed the Infinity brand from its inception as a very simple Miniature Tabletop Wargame with "Cyberpunk Background" to grow into the absolute BEST Skirmish Game with a very rich, detailed and original "Sci-Fi Manga Aesthethics". I tried unsuccessfully in the past to port this awesome Gameworld to My Players using systems ranging from the "Talsorian Cyberpunk 2020" to TSR / WOC "D20 Modern - Future" with low success ratio. Now that a very interesting Game Developer has shouldered this uneasy burden then there is a factive possibility to have no fatigue for obtaining an entertaining R.P.G. Experience into this richly detailed Background. The Modiphius "Game Developers Sub-Forum" has signaled that they reached the Kickstart Funding for starting to create fully at list 2/3 (Two Thirds) of the planned Manuals. They said that the Backers should start to receive their promised PDF towrds the Christmas 2015. Printed paperback Manuals would NOT available for general dissemination to the world community prior the end of 2016, so I HEARTHILY recommend the "DrivethruR.P.G." Staff to try to bargain with Modiphius the possibility of have the PDF Manuals to sell as soon as possible. In My humble opinion these could be a potentially excellent "Big Seller" for Drivethru, maybe comparable with prospective "Big Scores" like the "Exalted3" Project or the "Pathfinder" Series.....at least judging from the enthusiastic interest of the various Forum Communities eagerly expecting the non-backers release of the various Manuals (that are currently still "Work-In-Progress" even for the Basic one)

This is a great quick start product which gives you a good basic description of the Infinity world, clear and interesting simplified rules and an interesting introductory adventure. I always find rules in quick start products difficult to read through, but that wasn't the case here. I wasn't familiar with the 2D20 system but the mechanics seem good (and remind me of Pendragon in the core concept). The scenario had a nice premise and although I haven't played it read well and I certainly intend to.

The scenario is open about the fact that because it's a quickstart they've cut out the investigative part of the scenario and skipped to the action; this doesn't harm the adventure as it is, but having seen what was omitted (which was made available to Kickstarter backers as an update) I think it will be much better in it's complete form, especially if you're a fan of investigations. However, the sections contained in the quickstart look exciting and fun to play, and even if like me you don't know anything about Infinity really gives you a sense that the PCs are being put in the middle of something big from the outset.

The only very small issue I had with this was that the pre-generated characters took a bit of time to understand. The factions are explained, but not necessarily the sub-groups that these characters belong to. Possibly one or two sentences extra for each (and not from that character's perspective might have helped). For example, when I saw a character profile with 'Reverend Moira' at the top, I assumed that was the character's name, not her profession. If you know about Infinity (or can use a search engine as I did) it's not really a problem, but it would be worth doing a little research on each of the PC's backgrounds before running this if you don't already know. The PCs do look like a good and interesting group though, and the factional perspectives and sub missions are a really nice feature of this game.

It's also been very positive to see the updates that have been done to this product based on user feedback.

Overall, a product hasn't made me so excited about a game or setting for a long time. Normally I download free quick starts, skim them and then never go back to them. With this I've gone from not caring about Infinity to backing the Kickstarter for the RPG and looking very seriously at the miniatures game too.
