I’m running this, as I have played other Eastern Farraway adventures by Midnight Tower, with a group of strangers gathered from discord communities. And we are having so much fun! There are so many twists and turns (and cats!) that even in 3 3-hour sessions you won’t be able to use all of the material. Interesting characters (and cats!) and a fun mystery. Did I mention - cats?

Midnight Tower has emerged as my favorite indie adventure writers, and Call of the Wild is a good example of why. Their adventures are concise, logical, extremely easy to follow--both for DM and players--and very, very fun. They also always include digital maps, tokens and handouts as separate downloads for their adventures, which I GREATLY appreciate. I have yet to run a Midnight Tower adventure that wasn't enormous fun for me and my party and they include information to make them easily scalable for more advanced parties.

I bought An Unexpected Wedding Invitation because it was touted as a Jane Austen-inspired adventure. I'm not a RPG player but adult members of my family are D&D players and they kindly assigned several weeks of dedicated D&D time to play this with me. It was FUN! While there wasn't anything obviously 'Jane' about the adventure, the feel and mood were sympathetic to her author signature. Recommended for those new to D&D or roleplaying, or simply want to have a bit of fun.

I was quite hesitant to buy this based on the reviews, but I've enjoyed other Midnight Tower adventures so much, I decided to buy it anyway, and when I had to come up with a last minute one-shot for my party, I gave it a try. In the end, I understand the complaints...but I also think they're wrong.

This is a fairly simple adventure. Evy's uncle is concerned because Evy hasn't come to town for her weekly supplies. He hires the adventurers to go and look in on her and make sure she's okay. Evy is not okay. In multiple ways.

This adventure is simple, yes, but it was still a lot of fun and I liked the hints of the Cthulhu mythos being brought into the D&D world. I run a lot of Call of Cthulhu games also, and I very much enjoyed bringing that creepiness, that mood to the D&D universe. And, though I worried my party was a little underpowered for the fights, they came through and delighted in their close calls. The adventure even led to a spicy discussion of how to handle the aftermath of the adventure. Overall, it was a great time that everyone enjoyed strongly. I'm so glad I trusted Midnight Tower and gave it a chance.

I have run this twice now, and all players reported nothing but positive reviews of the adventure itself. There are solid clues, and a good backstory and synopsis for all of the characters. It makes the GMs job of portraying each NPC's desires, secrets, and shame appropriately. This is a great intro for beginner players. Light on combat, and easing their way into the mechanics of the game. There are some story breaking spells just like every other adventure. Detect Thoughts, Detect Good and Evil, things of this nature will of course vault the PCs to the conclusion with haste. That is not the fault or problem of the adventure. A solid mystery. The maps are bit lackluster, but serviceable. I made my own patterend off the basic layout given. This is my only negative thought on this module. I keep my VTT page for this adventure open, and I will definitely run it again.

Absolutely loved this book! Group I run for, was looking for a little bit of a romcom mystery, and this fit the bill to a tee! Highly recommend it for anyone, looking for a bit of a change of pace to the old dungeon run, and orc slaughter. 10/10

I am a huge fan of Midnight Tower at this point. Their scenarios are laid out well for reading and reference during the game. The stories are well thought out, interesting, and fun for my players. They always include the necessary maps and tokens for VTT play, which I DEEPLY appreciate as a VTT-only player and DM. The maps are well made and fun in battle, and usually come with grid and without. They're also good at writing adventures of the right complexity for the number of sessions and amount of time time allotted. And they give concrete info for scaling encounters for larger/stronger parties.

I was part of the kickstarter for this adventure and finally got to run it for my adventuring buds. We played it in about 8 hours but we didn’t do all the extras, and I leaned into the bits they were enjoying and skipped some others. It was super fun for a weekend getaway adventure. Light-hearted but well-constructed good times all around. The book is gorgeous—as are the maps and handouts!

This adventure was a LOT of fun. I ran it twice with two different groups & each time, much fun was had. The layout of the game pdf is well created and well thought out, I appreciate the inclusion of separate maps for player & GM and it just plays really well. The only reason it’s not a 5-star is it’s a little TOO easy to guess the culprit; both times, the players mainly ignored the other suspects, but for a one-shot? So much fun! I immediately bought a trilogy of other adventures.

This module provides a nice, well writen, well structured investigation, with plenty of things to find out, false clues, and side-myteries to unravell alongside the main plot. On that front, I am completely satisfied with what I got.

However, I cannot recommend playing this at the suggested level nine. I would not even recommend playing it at level 3. The thing is, there is magic in D&D and magic can solve many things. If the mystery acounted for this fact in some way, that would be fine, but it is a problem when it does not. Yes, the bad guy/gal has an object that hides the alignment (as if that was a tell tale sign), but nothing to protect agains scrying, mind reading, zone of truth...

Don't get me wrong, the mystery is great for a run-of-the-mill PC who has to look for clues, work to get answers, navigate deception, analyse evidence and use the grey cells to reach a conclusion. On the other hand, mister level 9 wizard can just cast detect thoughts on every single NPC, followed by augury, or locate object, or maybe even contact other plane, asking a demon for the answer. Ta-dah, mystery solved. Meanwhile, miss level 9 cleric over ther is using zone of truth during interrogations, and speak with the dead to ask questions to the deceased, or better yet, revivify... and that brings me to the next point: the whole plot is writen as if death was somehow permanent, which in D&D, and for a level 9 party, most definetively is not.

"Oh, no, the duchess is dead, who shall be the heir?" Lets just ask her. I cast speak with the dead.

I honestly can see no reason to play this module at level 9. There is nothing that tells me, yeah, that is a cool encounter and you need a high level party to face it. Quite the contrary. The combat encounters are just kind of there, and provide nothing to the investigation beyond a chance for the guy who decided to play a warrior with negative inteligence and wisdom, despite the DM's heads up that this was a murder mystery sesion, to do something. My recomendation is to play at level 1 or 2, because otherwise you are going to have to severely limit yor player options and spell selections for there to be any sort of fun. Actually, it would probably be better to play as a level 0 commoner than to play as a level 9 caster.

I am running this module on Sunday for my group, and with the prep-work done, I can say, it is absolutely NOT worth it. As a free PDF sample, maybe. But not as a full product, much less a hard-cover book. These 74 pages amount to, at best, a one-shot, and not a very good one.

I will not get into the quality of the paper, the formating or the illustrations, which are not great, but I don't mind much either, and will go straight to the "plot".

The mystery is mostly non-existant. The location of Evy is revealed by the first NPC the characters talk to, the quest giver if you will, and if the players decide to head straight there, thinking that there is where the adventure takes place (not uncommon in a one-shot for players to follow the hook head on), they will skip the whole city investigation phase, arrive at the tower, and find Evy, with no consequences or difficulties for having skiped a third of the module. But if they somehow decide to go around town asking questions, there is not much to do or find out either. The quest giver will lead them to NPC B, who knows nothing and in turn leads them to another location in the city, where they can talk to NPC C, who also knows nothing, landing the players back in square one, with only one lead: go to where Evy is supposed to be. Two locations to visit (one being the starting tavern) and four NPCs to talk to, one being the quest giver. That's what this book understands for investigation...

You may then be thinking that the plot happens in the location where Evy is suposed to be, but no. That is also not the case. The watchtower is made up of three rooms. Two of them mostly irrelevant, and totally skipable with the spells available to a level six party. Then the third room is where Evy is, holding all the answers, alongisde the final boss. And that's it. That's the adventure. Just picture this play pattern: Quest giver tells the party where Evy is supposed to be. They go there. They walk in. They immediately spot the hidden door (not too far fetched for someone in a level 6 party to have passive perception 14). They walk down, find Evy and get all the answers from her. The. End. Please do tell me, where is the mystery there? Where is the investigation?

Aside from the "investigation", the module does no offer much challenge or anything else either. There is a single trap, that cannot be detected, dissarmed or interacted with, so basically a hit point tax. There are a grand total of three combat encounters, one of them being a random encounter on the road, unrelated to the plot, and just there to rise the page-count. The third is the final boss, of course, that is fine. And the second one is a monster, that is in a plot location, but also unrelated to the plot. Could have been any other creature from the Monster Manual and it would not have mattered. It doesn't even cause madness or fear.

Which leads me to, perhaps, my biggest concern. This is supposed to be a lovecraftian adventure for DnD, and yet, there is no mechanic in place, no nothing, that can make the players go insane. There are two issolated instances that may cause a minor madness, but those last up to 10 minutes. That is barely an inconvenience. That is not a lovecraftian experience. Haven't the authors played any Cthulu game? Mansions of madness? Arkham horror? I mean, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. The mechanics for sanity are in page 265 of the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the mechanics for fear and stress in page 195 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. They could have used those, or at least referenced them, and they definetively should have added more elements that can eat at the players sanity. You don't lose a lovecraftian adventure because you run out of hit points, for crying out loud, you lose because you go mad.

So yeah, this module is marketed as a lovecraftian adventure, under the motto "mystery, madness and a missing person", but really the mystery is so simple that you can solve it without even trying —just go where you are told and get all the answers from the last NPC—, there is no way for your character to go mad, and the missing person is save and sound, not a hair out of place, right where everyone tells you she is supposed to be, which, in my book, is not what missing person means.

Cannot recomend.

My husband and I took part in the Kickstarter for this, and we're very glad we did. He's been a fan of D&D for many years, but I only got into them in 2020 (and mainly Call of Cthulhu). I was never interested in D&D, as dungeon crawlers and extensive combat usually bore me (sorry!).

However, An Unexpected Wedding Invitation caught my attention, mainly because of the Jane Austen and Murder Myster theme. So I decided to give it a chance as a player using this adventure, got two friends to join, and my husband acted as Dungeon Master. The story was very interesting, the characters well defined, and the story was very well-structured. It can be played with non-violent encounters, which is what we did. I'd say, though, that if you're looking for a combat-heavy scenario this is not the right one, unless the dungeon master adds some more.

In addition to this, the design of the book is top-notch; the content is very well laid out and the book beautiful to look at. The art is wonderful.

Regarding playing time, I think it took us four sessions of about 2-3 hours. We usually did about two chapters per playing session, except on the last one, where we focused on solving the crime (in book terms, these would be the last three chapters, although we already knew some of the info provided in Chapter 9).

In summary, if the theme of this scenario catches your attention and feels interesting to you, I think the odds are you'll love it. I'm really looking forward to trying other scenarios by Midnight Tower.
