I urge you now: do not open this book. Do not read its contents. Walk away, live your simple life, and keep these creatures of darkness in the shadows where they belong.

Opening your eyes to this horrible world – where demons possess dolls, the undead stalk the night, the Devil walks among us, and mummies march from their tombs – is an act of incredible bravery, or perhaps, complete foolishness. Turn away now, before it’s too late…

No? Well, in that case, welcome to a little game called They Came from Beyond the Grave!

They Came from Beyond the Grave! is a dramatic, hammy, and horrifying tabletop roleplaying game encompassing the shock, terror, eroticism, and humor of 1970s horror. This game allows you to play with all the magnificent content from the movies of Hammer, Amicus, and Roger Corman, and promises the fun and thrills of the horror movie genre!

In They Came from Beyond the Grave!, you play humans faced with the horrors of the supernatural. You’ll find yourself pitted against vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and constructed critters, along with demons, slashers, and THE DEVIL HIMSELF. Adventures range from the one-shot exploration of a haunted house, to the multi-era play across the 19th century and 1970s.

They Came from Beyond the Grave! contains a mix of serious threat, unmitigated ham, and nonsensical farce. We never tell you what is amusing and what is not, but we do provide the tools to make a seriously fun game incorporating all the elements of 1970s horror movies. This game provides rules for funny quips and amusing cinematics for incorporation in a story, along with dozens of special powers and story devices.

They Came from Beyond the Grave! uses the Storypath System, provided in full in the pages of this book!

They Came from Beyond the Grave! includes:

  • Five playable Archetypes — the Dupe, the Hunter, the Mystic, the Professor, and the Raconteur.
  • Rules for character creation and play, using the Storypath System fully detailed in this book.
  • Cinematic powers, such as the ability to tear through cheap sets, cut to black when everything is looking grim, and even cut to a montage to speed up play.
  • Quips to throw in at entertaining moments, giving your characters a chance at an award-winning scene, or at least one that makes it into the trailer.
  • Scores of monsters looking to hunt you down and make your lives miserable, from Dracula to Frankenstein’s Monster.
  • Two ready-to-play scenarios, playable straight from the book.

Also available now from Onyx Path Publishing:

Party Beach Creature Feature!Party Beach Creature Feature! (A Jumpstart for They Came From Beneath the Sea!)

It’s a beautiful, sunny weekend on the beach. The kids are partying, the beer’s cold, and someone’s passing around what the locals call “jazz cigarettes.” Let’s be honest — life couldn’t be much better in this 1950s slice of American utopia. That is, until monstrous gill-kin emerge from the waves and assault our idyllic town, and shadowy science researchers conspire to stop the party!

You are the defenders of small-town America! And you are the only people who can drive the tide of invasion back into the sea!

They Came from Beneath the Sea! is a campy, action-filled, horrifying tabletop roleplaying game of 1950s science fiction, taking the best (and worst) bits from the B-movies of the era and presenting them as a thoroughly entertaining story. This jumpstart provides you with all the tools you need to start a story of They Came from Beneath the Sea! and tell many stories to follow.

They Came from Beneath the Sea! uses the Storypath System, provided in the pages of this book!

Hi.

I'm trying to decide if this book is for me, or if I'm trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I'm not familiar with Hammer horror movies. Overall, I'm not a big fan of "straight" horror, like slasher flicks and such, but I love horror as it can feed into more of an action-adventure vibe. So, for instance, the 1990s Mummy movies, or the Blade movies, something like the Supernatural TV series, that kind of thing. I'm thinking low-budget blaxploitation meets horror movie. Would this book work for that, or would I better be served with something like Classified, or something along those lines? Thanks.

Oh this would still function perfectly well for movies like the Mummy. It has an entire action system in it that's the same across all They Came Froms, the main difference in this one being Archetypes and Cinematics built for horror.

I just bought the physical copy of this at my local game shop, but cannot find a character sheet online anywhere. Do I have to buy a pdf copy of this book to get the character sheet pdf?!

So, don't know if anyone else has noticed this issue, but the hardcover standard color POD edition I received yesterday has a printing error. Specifically, the title on the spine isn't centered down the spine... it is more towards the front, with bits of the text visible when you are looking at the front cover. I can provide photos to show what I mean. Regardless, not a real problem for me, as the rest of the book seems just fine. I just wanted to bring it up, in case there is a problem with the digital file used for the POD, or if it was an issue at the printers.

I own a PoD version without that problem, so it may be a printing issue for your copy.

I figured as much, but thought it worth pointing out, in case there was an issue outside of the printer. Nevertheless, still a perfectly usable copy, so I'm happy with it.

Very welcome, Sir! And looking forward to collecting the set!
I have now gone cover to cover a couple of times and feel confident to run a session, and I am already loving They Came From Cyclops Cave and Classified...I refrained from LARPing the amateur reviewer, as I think my comments are being misunderstood by some, but please do keep me informed of any further Kickstarters, and Congratulations on your success with these titles; you deserve good things ;-)

Is this able to be crossed over with Beneath the Sea? Like if I ran a starting adventure as this and then had a story using They Came From Beneath The Sea where the same characters go on vacation, would that be doable?

Absolutely. These games are built to be crossover compatible, so characters from one game (as well as Quips, Cinematics, monsters, etc.) can be patched into the other They Came Froms without issue.

I love Matthew's sense of humour and that was one of the major reasons I purchased this book sight unseen. I was not disappointed, it's a delight to read. Hard to find fault with anything, but I am struggling with how Antagonists are presented. After several rereads, I'm still not sure how I'm supposed to generate antagonists and how to use the table.
I have Trinity and Scion and I grasped how antagonists work there, but here it's different and so unfortunately presented, a contrast to the rest of the otherwise amazing book.
I guess in the end I'll have to wing it.

Hi Danijel! I'm not sure I understand your query regarding antagonists. There's a chapter full of them, each with their own traits and powers. They are played by the Director as a GM in any other game would use monsters or villains, taking their turn in combat order to roll dice or activate a special power they possess, and their Health is listed so you know how much damage they can take. I hope this helps!

Matthew, thank you for your answer.
I meant in fact the rules for creating my own antagonist starting on page 104, and specifically the chart on page 105. I'm not sure if the numbers under Proficient, Average and Weak are dice pools or just Skill ratings. Judging the the text above these should be Skill ratings, but they are too high for skills, so I'm guessing dice pools. But if they are dice pools, why would I then need to rank the antagonist's attributes as Strong, Typical and Puny?
It's a little confusing, that's all.

Those numbers are higher than 5 due to an assumption of Scale. In other words, if an antagonist has an Attribute rating of 4 (let's say in Might) and a Skill rating of 7, 8, 10, 12, or 14, those are things the antagonist is really very very good at (which is rarely more than three things).

Hi,

Pg 68: Under TROPES, 3rd paragraph it says "Chapter Two details Tropes in full, and you can also find them starting on p. 68."

Clicking the link to Pg 68 takes you nowhere because you're already on Pg 68... and there's no list starting on Pg 68.

Ah! That list was cut for space but the reference was not. The Tropes in Chapter Two: Archetypes are the full selection (barring any sourcebook additions).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
