2300AD

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Three hundred years from now, humanity is claiming worlds far from Earth. Despite nearly destroying itself in the Twilight War, despite all the wars since, humanity has held on and kept its dream alive. 2300AD is the story of that dream, as humanity reaches for the stars.

This is a richly-developed hard science fiction universe, with ships spinning against the night as they are propelled by the stutterwarp drive, a true violation of physics as we know now it. Airships, helicopters and hovercraft are common sights on worlds of the frontier, while spaceplanes and rockets carry explorers and traders to orbit, and from there starships take them across the gulf of space to the colonies.

Campaigns in 2300AD range from interstellar exploration and war on the far frontier, building new colonies on hostile worlds, discovering and understanding alien species, and engaging in espionage and crime in the gritty mega-cities of the Core worlds.

The 2300AD box set contains:

Book 1 Characters & Equipment: Everything you need to create explorers, company agents, military personnel, merchants and other inhabitants of 2300AD. This book also contains a comprehensive equipment guide, personal augmentations, and a selection of robots and drones commonly used in space and on colony worlds.

Book 2 The Worlds of 2300AD: An exploration of the universe of 2300AD, from the Core worlds to the furthest colonies. You will learn about the aliens and animals that inhabit them, how humanity has adapted to living on their surfaces, and the most hostile of environmental threats to be found beyond the Earth.

Book 3 Vehicles & Spacecraft: A full guide to operating and fighting in spacecraft and vehicles, from humble dirt bikes to powerful spacegoing frigates. There is also a glimpse at the alien spacecraft that have been encountered thus far by humanity.

Starchart of Known Space: A massive poster map depicting every star system known to humanity and the routes starships take to each.

Quick question... is the Explorer's Edition sufficient to proxy for the Traveller core rulebook here? Or would there be any significant problem using an older Mongoose core?

In terms of the rules, pretty much yes - but you will be missing a lot of the careers. Could work well for a focussed exploring-style campaign.

Hope that helps!

Does this version differ (art aside) significantly from the 1988 version?

Indeed - you should find it a lot easier to get into, it has a much tighter focus on the Frontier, and it integrates into the current Traveller rules so is easy to play!

Wait! It costs $50 for a PDF!?! and I still can't make a character unless I have the Traveller core book. I would fire the guy in charge of pricing for being an idiot. I might pay $50 for a physical box set if it had everything I needed and excellent quality books. Someone seriously needs to be slapped with a fish.

I am afraid we are fresh out of fish at Mongoose HQ, my apologies. However, we already have a bundle for 2300AD and the Traveller Core Rulebook which should solve your dilemma.

We cannot replicate the issue here with the new file, so we suspect it may be a caching problem. We have re-uploaded it with a new file name, please give that a try!

Even the $25 Deal of the Day Pricing is on the high side for a not-on-sale PDF version of the game.

No thanks.

I think DriveThruRPG messed up on the pricing for the discount as in I don't think they applied it. If I remember correctly this is normally $25. I could be wrong though.

It is correct - even on the Mongoose site this PDF is around $50 (EUR 46.95). So is just a very expensive PDF.

That's nuts! There is no excuse for it to be so freaking high. Thanks for clarifying.

For this same price, you can still get a decent condition box set for 1e or 2e 2300AD from the old school.

While overall presentation and layout are markedly improved compared to the previous edition, the game's organization, sadly, is still lacking, especially when it comes to character creation.

To create a 2300AD charachter:

- you need three different books/pdfs (Traveller core, 2300AD Characters & Equipment, 2300 AD Worlds),
- while necessary information in those books is found in different chapters (e. g. in general character creation, specific careers, DNAM chapter, core worlds appendix).
- Information is presented in different ways (body of text, flowcharts, tables), not always using the best form (e. g., there are modifiers hidden in the body of text; I think those belong in tables or at least bullet points for easy reference).
- Information in different places/forms of presentation is sometimes contradictory (e. g. the survival modifier in the character generetion example) or missing in obvious places.

All of this makes creating a character a real...See more

I agree with much of this actually, and while I DO enjoy Traveller character generation, what I think might be useful is a ‘cheat sheet’ summary of character generation with tabulated information about planets and necessary DNAMs and the like. If it is a box set, then additional resources such as these would be useful. I’d also like some pre-gens, blank character sheets, ship sheets and this sort of thing added if possible.

Since POD appears to be off the table, why can't we print these books using Lulu?

We have never found full colour books do well with that kind of printing (as yet, with current technologies). However, a printed edition is on its way and will be available early next year.

Hope that helps!

Why do you think you can't? I certainly would if I had bought the thing (price being the only impeditive), as I do with all PDFs I like.

First, thank you for updating this product to the latest iteration of the core rules.

Second, thank you for having Colin on this project. He and I were talking back when he was trying to get something done (2320 AD with QLI and Hunter Gordon) and he got shafted and so did his artists. I don't know all the details, but he was stung on this operation and any money he made on that was all pushed to the artists so they got something for their work. Colin is a hard working guy and does good work. And having him be a Canuck makes me happy too.

I've been collecting since '2300 AD' came out in the box with the star-map with bogus inclusions for IP reasons. It felt like the Napoleonic / Colonial period in space which was a great change of pace to what else was out there.

I've run Kafer vs. Human wargames at several conventions (GZG 25mm Kra-vak look a lot like Kafers and some of their 25mm resin vehicles - now maybe owned by someone else - were obviously homages - the German tank...See more

I haven't bought it yet but for the presentation and illustration of the game... I think it is a fair price. I'd say they could tone it down a little bit and set optimal price point, but in the end they should do whatever they want to do. Still way better than dnd 5e pricings.

WOW this is not worth 3 books in a box with a star chart, I was on the Mongoose sight, they're charging $99.99 for pre-orders for this game holy-cow!

Which edition is this? Is this a reboot, or another whole cloth version? If I already have earlier editions, will this add any content worth the price? Didn't Mongoose already put out 2300 Revised? How is this different? Thanks!

Thanks, Matthew! When you say the latest edition, do you mean Mongoose 2E? I know that's kinda a dumb question because I don't know if there is any other version of Traveller that is current, but asking just in case.

Companies can charge whatever they want for their products, but consumers can choose to buy or not buy at that price. Mongoose will get people who are huge fans, or don't care about price, buying their product. I will not be one of those purchasers. As others have stated this is a steep price to pay for just a PDF. I wish them well and hope they have success but (seriously guys) this is going to turn off many like myself.

As has happened on Mongoose’s site, the files have been updated, notably with an appendix that includes information on Core Worlds’ characters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
