Welcome to the Halcyon Stars play test document. What you will find within these pages is a stripped down version of the game rules. Six pre-generated characters and a short adventure.

We invite you to give Halcyon Stars a test drive and let us know what you think. You can contribute to this project simply be reading through, and offering your thoughts or feelings about what you’ve read, or you can go all the way and give feedback based on actual play. 

Obviously feedback on actual play is of much greater value to us.

We would very much like to know what you liked and didn’t like, and why. The ‘why’ part being the most useful feedback.

Hey - I can't download this.
I'm not sure if I'm being daft: I can see it in my library, but there's no download icon, and clicking it in my lib just takes me back to its main page.

OMFG, stop using adjectives as nouns! It's ridiculous and sounds idiotic. I know it's a thing in RPGs now, but just just don't do it.

I'll take on board any and all comments, but as I'm, not a 'grammarian', I'm not sure I understand your objection. Nouns being 'names' of things, these are the names I used because the offered meaning... I could have gone for 'body', 'brains' etc... but that seemed childish. You can email me direct if you want to explain it to me.

Just wanted to give some appreciation of posting this material for free. Over the last few years it's become common for publishers to charge people for the "privilege" of playtesting their games. I'll definitely give it a read and a review!

Thank you. The way I look at it is that I cannot play enough games to adequately test everything, so you guys are doing me a favour by even looking at my work. So the honour is mine :)

Eventually this will morph into the Quickstart, which will still be free. And a Core Rulebook which will not be.

I haven't had a chance to play, but love what I've read...is it my imagination or is this not the first version of this game? I feel like I owned a previous version at one point (in hardback, no less) but I'm not sure if I'm just having a Mandela-effect moment ;)

I did release an early test version on Redit, and on Delta Vector.
But to my knowledge there is no other game quite like it.
The first draft was written 8-9 years ago and was called 'Expanse', but when I came back to it last year I discovered that the name was taken by a popular franchise.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
