From the Journal of the Legendary Ranger and his Pet Hamster

A century has passed since the Bhaalspawn fought over the legacy of their father — Bhaal, the Lord of Murder. Two heroes witnessed the epic struggle firsthand — the ranger Minsc and his faithful companion, Boo.

Minsc and Boo were able to track down old friends and hated enemies and find out what they’ve been up to over the past century. They’ve compiled everything into this journal, edited by the traveler extraordinaire, Volo Geddarm.

Included in this journal are four cities, including Athkatla and Baldur’s Gate; ten group patrons led by some of Minsc and Boo’s old friends; a dozen new monsters; six arch villains and eleven dastardly henchmen.

My POD copy arrived today and I am loving it! All the typos from the PDF are still there, unfortunately, but this isn't a dealbreaker for me on this wonderful book.

I plan on purchasing a PoD if they ever decide to deign us with an update to correct many of the errors in the book.

I wish I had been aware of the typos before spending $45+ on a POD copy. I feel a bit cheated there. Content of the book is great but that was a high price to pay for a book that is only 155 pages and has several mistakes. They should take the POD version down until they fix it.

Is there a good place to start an errata list for this product? For example, on p. 68 bottom right it reads "Run, Boo, run!. If Boo take damage, Minsc can choose to
take the damage instead." when it should read "Run, Boo, run!. If Boo takes damage, Minsc can choose to take the damage instead."

I made a list of all the typos/issues myself and others have found. You can find it at the end of the review here.

There are some proofreading issues, but the content is good if you can get past that. I recommend at least the PDF, as you get a great deal for $15, and maybe get a hard copy later if the errors are fixed.

Thinking about getting this, but I hear it is full of errors, typos... basically no one proofed it? Is this fixed? TBH I can give money directly to a cause without WotC getting their hands on it lol

This book is great, but its very much a sword coast guide. It was a better read than I expected and had a ton of new and old lore and good monster stat blocks.
5stars. If you love the old baldurs gate pc games or run games in the sword coast; this book is for you, and is Miniature giant space hamster approved.

I run mostly Eberron. Is this very specific to the forgotten realms or sword coast? Would I find lots of use for Eberron or other campaigns?
Customer avatar
Josh S October 19, 2021 11:53 am UTC

It is 100% Forgotten Realms specific, except for the Archdevils and Monster stats.

Might be able to get some use out of the Group Patrons and Arch Villains if you "re-brand" them a little. Change names and associations to more Eberron specific names and groups. Sounds like a lot of work to convert though : /

Would it be possible to get high res versions of the maps included in this book?

WotC hasn't responded to any comments here. I doubt you'll get any answer to this unfortunately. You might be able to open up the maps page in Illustrator and then export it to a larger size.

Wait, this DOESN’T come with high resolution maps inboth players and DM version?!
I guess that’s a “no buy” for me :(

Is this material canonical?

They haven't made that clear but I'd lean towards no. Even with WotC publishing it. I think its more of a fun take on these characters.

I wouldn't get to hung up on it, WotC is weird about canon in 5e and have taken a 'let the customer decide approach' to their multiverse. I'd put the chances at better than even. But I'm leaning towards almost certain given the timing, it being a WotC blessed refresh, the quality of the content and that the author James Ohlen was the original lead creator/writer of Baldur's Gate.

Much of this is a significant re-write of a DMsguild supplement 'Heroes of Baldur's Gate' James released in 2019 under his Arcanum Worlds publishing venture. Where the the older book rehashed what was already known from the first two games this evolves the characters forward filling in a lot of growth gaps with compelling new stories and potential future plot hooks. They are so compelling in fact that I wouldn't be surprised to see some if not all of it show up in BG3 or future BG releases at which point it's basically canon. The timing would seem to support it with James' team and Larian now working under the WotC...See more

I know this was taken down for a day or two. Does anyone know why, or if they updated the spellcaster stat blocks to use the new method of reducing spells and making some abilities?
Customer avatar
DnD Detective / October 14, 2021 4:23 am UTC
PURCHASER
We don't know why. The statblocks use the old system (spell slots for most spellcasting, at will/per day for innate spellcasting).

Would people mind posting pictures of the softcover and hardcover printings to see how they look? I’m debating getting the hardcover but want to see the difference first.

I don't have it with me now, but the hardcover looks pretty much just like a WotC hardcover, except for the slight size increase that you get with a PoD book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
