100 Encounters for a Fantasy Swamp (Lore 100)

Swamps, mires, bogs and marshes can be found all over the world, wherever water isn't frozen. Even places where it is frozen may thaw out and turn swampy. They are places where travel itself can be dangerous, where it can be easy to get lost, end up stuck in water, mud and quicksand and encounter dangerous creatures. This supplement has 100 different encounters that can be used to liven up a swamp trek or as a source of potential adventure hooks. The encounters may be hazardous, odd or perhaps even useful.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Plants in this area appear to be regularly laid out and useful or edible. The suggestion (an Average Farming roll) is that the patch of vegetation is being tended to by someone.
  • Regular stones poking out of the swamp in patches are all that remains of an ancient causeway that leads through the area. Many stones from the causeway are missing; others are sunken into the mud or overgrown.
  • Ripples disturb the surface of the nearby water, as something large and unseen travels rapidly below it.
  • Rising out of the marshy terrain is a single hillock of dry, solid ground, from the top of which grows a single tree. The hillock is the only dry area for some distance and, as such, is often used by travellers as well as wildlife. Some of the wildlife is potentially dangerous (rolls for random encounters should be made more frequently in this area).
  • Rotting stumps slowly sinking into the marsh mark what used to be a grove of trees. The trees do not appear to have been cut down, but died and collapsed (an Average Forestry roll to confirm).

One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one is ads.

The supplement is also available in the following versions: 3Deep, Pathfinder and system neutral. You do not need all versions.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
