STARS WITHOUT NUMBER ALIEN DATABASE

Introduction

If you are a fan of sci-fi role-playing games, you may have heard of Stars Without Number, a popular OSR game that lets you explore the vast and mysterious galaxy. One of the most appealing aspects of sci-fi games is the encounter with alien creatures, both friendly and hostile. However, creating and designing aliens can be a challenging and time-consuming task for GMs. That’s why I was excited to discover Stars Without Number Compatible - Alien Database, a book that provides ready-made aliens for your sci-fi adventures. In this review, I will give you an overview of the book, its strengths and weaknesses, and my final verdict.

Overview

Stars Without Number Compatible - Alien Database is a 104-page PDF book that contains alien creatures for the sci-fi game Stars Without Number. The book is written by Davide Tramma and published by Angry Golem Games. The book is compatible with the Revised Edition of Stars Without Number, but can also be used with other OSR games.

Here are some examples of aliens from the book and their short descriptions:

  • The blue ooze is a blob-like creature that can secrete a corrosive acid to dissolve organic matter. It is usually found in dark and damp places, such as sewers, caves, or abandoned buildings. It is not very intelligent, but it can sense vibrations and heat. It is a scavenger that feeds on anything it can find, including corpses, garbage, or living beings. It is a dangerous threat to anyone who encounters it, as its acid can melt flesh and metal alike.
  • The cave lurker is a stealthy predator that dwells in the shadows of underground caverns. It has a humanoid shape, but with long claws, sharp teeth, and glowing red eyes. It can blend in with the darkness and move silently, making it hard to detect. It hunts by ambushing its prey and tearing them apart with its claws and teeth. It is a solitary creature that avoids other cave lurkers, unless it is mating season.
  • The crystal fungus is a strange life form that grows on mineral-rich planets. It resembles a cluster of crystals that emit a faint glow. It has a rudimentary nervous system that allows it to communicate with other crystal fungi through psionic resonance. It feeds on minerals and sunlight, and can produce spores that can travel through space. It is not hostile, but it can defend itself by emitting a psionic blast that can stun or harm intruders.

I have checked my control panel. I can see only one file, but I suppose the platform has not updated the entry properly. The last version should be the one placed at he bottom of the list, the one which contains the illustration of the arctic worm.

Got it. Thank you. When you update files the user's library will show both old and new version in alphabetical order, which is why it's helpful to date and/or number updates.

The preview has a strange typo/misprint at the start of the Brain Spider main text. Is this fixed in the pdf?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
