Random Social Interaction Hex Flower Generator – provides a procedural way to generate NPC-NPC social interactions/entanglements.

Basically, add a number of NPCs to a Hex Flower structure, roll 3D6 for each and link them up in a web of intrigue using the suggested rules.

There are sample social interactions, but of course you can customise these to make your own.

Example
Here's an example taken for this document:

random-social-interaction-hex-flower-dt-

So this means:

  • Mayor (secretly) keeps tabs on the Merchant
  • Sorceress is less powerful than widely thought
  • Assassin (secretly) works for the Sorceress
  • Merchant (secretly) spies on the Mayor and has an arcane connection to the Inn Keeper
  • Gambler (strongly) badmouths/slanders the Inn Keeper; and (in the past) had secret information about the Baron, or alternatively this secret information is about the Baron’s past
  • Baron (strongly + secretly) dislikes the Mayor; and (secretly) owes ‘something’ (substantive) to the Assassin

I'm very happy for you to pay nothing for this product; and anything given to me will only be frittered away on RPG-related wares anyway. That said, even a nominal sum like 50 cents seems to bump this thing up the DriveThru charts and encourages me to make more things like this!

I like the idea behind the system but it has some strange quirks.

The problems mostly come from the fact, that love (2) and hate (12) only occure, when you roll two ones or two sixes.

In combination with the doubles and flow rules, this means that love is always onesided and strong and hate always twosided and strong. (Except in the case of a tripple)

The onesided/twosided problem can be solved, when the third die is used for the interaction flow. I sadly still have no solution for the "always strong"-part.

Furthermore if a person hates or loves another person, they can never be stronger or weaker as expected (circled).

Besides these points, I really really like this system. It creates complex NPC interactions in a few minutes and in form of a handy chart for reference.

Hi Lucas - thanks for the comments.

I spotted the ‘double problem’ and thought it was OK, as love and hate I expect to be "strong" emotions. PS - Only ‘even’ outcomes can be strong.

The ‘fixed direction’ problem is not so good (aside from two NPCs independently one way loving each other etc …).
I’ll need to double check on this, but for some reason I thought I fixed this issue (but it seems not).

Your solution I think works (perhaps it’s what I thought I had done but hadn’t actually done!!!!!!).
:O

I could instead change this so as to sum up dice 1 and 3 (as opposed to 1 and 2). But, I think I’d need to also swap over the touching and spaced doubles rule. These changes seem less elegant than your solution. Again, like to think this over and see.

My problem will be having to redraw the example ...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
