Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades: Wuxia Roleplaying

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades is a roleplaying game of dark adventure and heroic thrills inspired primarily by the wuxia stories of Gu Long. Players assume the roles of eccentric heroes who solve mysteries, avenge misdeeds, uphold justice, and demonstrate profound mastery of the martial arts. Character creation is designed to produce fleshed-out, potent individuals who can follow several paths, including those of the physician, beggar, assassin, thief, soldier, bandit, and more. These characters inhabit a unique martial world, or Jianghu, set in a romanticized ancient China. The towns, temples, and inns the characters can visit, and the sects and factions with whom they interact, will bring their own character to the game and provide a host of opportunities – and threats.

The game is based on a simple ten-sided dice pool mechanic, loosely modeled on the one found in Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate, and play is designed to be gritty, suspenseful, and fast, so the focus remains on solving mysteries and roleplaying your character. When combat does arise, it is consequential and swift, and often resolved in a single role of the dice. This rulebook includes a sample martial world and a starting adventure, as well as guidelines for games masters looking to run wuxia games and create their own unique Jianghu, rife with martial experts, sects, and mysterious locations.

I found a copy of this book at a game store in Las Vegas this weekend. Very excited. Does anyone know if the publisher offers a free pdf if you buy the IRL version?

No, in fact Osprey don't even bundle the pdf with the physical book if you buy direct.

Is the PDF printer friendly or is there a PF version of it?

I saw this from the Seth Skorkowsky review. I am extremely enamored with the style and setting and the rules are fairly easy to follow and teach (which I'm grateful for!). I'll be running this with my tabletop group as our next campaign.

I do have two questions: is there an FAQ that covers common questions? And are the art resources from the book available as downloads? I found a few from googling but not the entire set. This extends to the maps from the adventures. I would love to have these as downloads (especially without map markers).

Hi William. This is Brendan Davis. The Osprey website does have resources like a character sheet, a naming guide and an adventure. I am not sure if the art is available there. In terms of a FAQ we have a lot of advice scattered across various podcasts and blogs. I am happy to answer anything specific you might want to know (and I could post a FAQ on my blog or Jeremy's if there are enough questions). One thing I will say is the game emphasizes rulings so the GM has a lot of leeway to determine how something ought to be resolved if there is any ambiguity.

That's where I found out about it, too! And I'm getting it now, so thanks to Seth!

Love the game, just have a quick question; on page 57 under Studied blade style, it mentions that it incurs '-2d10 to initiative'. Since Initiative isn't a mechanic for this game, is this referring to a speed penalty? Or am I reading something wrong? Thanks.

Hi Micah. Thanks! I am one of the writers. Yes, that penalty is just for your speed skill roll made during the Turn Order phase. Any reference to initiative refers to Turn Order.

Hi! Is there anything included in the pdf release on DTRPG that isn't included in the hardcover release?

Hi! The PDF and the hardcover release are the same - there's no extra material in either of them.

Hi, great game really! I just wonder how you deal with chases when one character has only Athletics and the other both Athletics and Lightness Martial Art? The second should have a huge advantage but how do you deal with this exactly from a game mechanics point of view?

Hello Vivien and thanks for the compliment. I am going to post an answer here and address this question in a podcast (since it gets into some interesting 'rulings' territory). But before I do I just wanted to ask for some clarification so I answer as best as possible. Did you mean to say Speed and Lightness Martial arts (as these are the two skills referenced in the races and chases) or were you thinking of situations where the GM decides to bring Athletics into the races and chases as well?

Hello Brendan, thanks for your kind answer! Yes, you are right, I made a mistake, Speed is concerned not Athletics! My bad! I take the opportunity to ask for another clarification. Some Signature abilities give the capacity to attack one target per level (e.g. Bitter Couple Sharing Discontent). Do you intend character level or Martial Art level. For instance, a lvl 6 character with 3d10 Martial art would attack 3 or 6 targets? The latter option seems a more straightforward reading of the rule but slightly overkill, so I was wondering. I am looking forward to the podcast (please post a link if possible).
And happy 2021!

Hello Vivien, that would be character level, so 6 attacks for live 6. That phrasing "targets per level" is present in a number of techniques and unless it specifies something like skill rank, it refers to character level.

In the case of Speed and Lightness Martial Arts, you would general be deciding which one is relevant to the situation (so you would usually call for either a Speed roll or a Lightness Martial Arts roll). But it does fit into the rulings concept, so it is open enough space for you to interpret it differently I think. So if I were running it, I might have opposed Speed rolls if they are running in the streets, but shift to opposed Lightness Martial Arts if they take to rooftops or try leaping over chasms. But again, I think it is a light and fluid enough mechanic, that I would encourage you to interpret it as you think best fits the situation.

Happy 2021 to you as well!

Hi Brendan,
that's very clear! Thanks! So those are extremely powerful abilities indeed! I agree with you, mechanics are extremely light and fluid so coming up with rulings is easy, no problem here. It is indeed a system both robust and agile. And very easy to play on roll20 because the macro for the dice rolls are very easy to create even for a tech-impaired guy like me. I will be on the look-out for future scenarios!!
Best,
V

Also bought the physical book and got no .pdf. What the hell is wrong with Osprey? It's an industry standard. I already paid for the content and they have it readily available. There's zero work required on their side.

Sorry for the issues. Not entirely sure what was wrong with the PDF that was causing letters to disappear, but we've uploaded a new file that seems to have sorted things out.

I found Jeremy's YouTube channel recently when I was looking for information and inspiration for a wuxia RPG I was thinking of making, and probably watched ten of his videos before discovering that he was about to release a wuxia RPG of his own! And then I pre-ordered it. Anyway, I just found that kind of funny. P.S.: I'm still gonna make my thing, but I'm happy to support him making his thing, too.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
