Numa

Selected Option:

In a distant swamp in the interior of medieval
Japan, in a small city called Mizutamari,
lives a society of frogs built around dynastic
swamp lords and amphibious warriors
beholden to oaths of honor and revenge.
NUMA is heavily inspired by the graphic
novels Musashi by Eji Yoshikawa and Vagabond
by Takehiro Inoue, Akira Kurosawa’s samurai
films, OSR RPGs, and oriental batrachians.

I'm not allowed to review this product for some reason, despite purchasing it, so I'll put my notes here.

It's 2/5 stars and most of that is for the graphic design and layout.

The rules are a random hodgepodge, being unnecessarily convoluted in some place and non-existent elsewhere without rhyme or reason. OSR games can be like that, but it seems particularly egregious here.

There is no background at all, except for an intro paragraph. I don't need War & Peace, but I'd expect at least the inspiration tables to provide implied setting - this is were a lot of OSR style games have their juice, but they are bereft of anything other than generic plot points and extremely lacking in size and scope.

Repeatedly being told to come up with your own ideas in a product devoid of them is irritating.

The core conceit is interesting, but the author does nothing with it. If it was a $2 product I'd have not worried about it, but for the price it's daylight...See more

How many supernatural elements (besides anthropomorphic frogs) does have? The preview mention the possibility of summoning oni.

Numa is more low, cause we have the kurosawa feeling. You will not see a Oni in front of you, but you will feel that the wind could be a kami. Think about Throne of Blood.

I noticed a couple of grammatical/duplicate content errors I believe. Is there a good place to contact you about these?

Sounds interesting and the preview looks great, but not being directly compatible with OSR games, which means extra work for the referee (me), is a drawback. Honestly, will I be able to use it in a B/X game without much fuss?

As the editor, I can safely say that NUMA is a fantastic product! I can't wait to run games with it with my friends.

To address Italo's comment: NUMA an "OSR" (old school revival) game in spirit, as it has a focus on exploration, modularity, and high lethality). NUMA has its own minimalist ruleset, but if you prefer crunchier, 1E-style D&D rules you can always just take the setting, magic system, and rules you like and slap it onto your favorite rules chassis!

The Description say OSR, but from which game and, if it's the most famous game in the world, which edition?

It contains it's own OSR-style rule system, it's not directly based on 1E, B/X, etc.

I'm sure it's a great product and a great setting, it's just that I don't get why new unique rule systems created in these years get called "old school" or "OSR" while they're not old at all and have nothing in common with old systems. I think that "Rule Light" would be a more fitting name for new systems.

I understand your view my friend, but the "second wave" of OSR changed the concept. OSR is not ONLY retroclone.

OSR describes a design philosophy trying to capture the feel of old school D&D. Its becoming its own genre beyond imitating and iterating on old TSR games and modules, or "retroclones".
This video is very instructive on the history and philosophy of the movement: https://youtu.be/wRVJNkOObIU
Put simply, not all OSR games are retroclones, but (nearly) all retroclones are OSR games (kinda like not all rectangles are squares but all squares are rectangles).
A helpful thing to search would be to look for "Dungeons & Dragons" "D&D-OGL" "Classic D&D/AD&D" tags in Rules System section if you're looking for retroclone stuff. Here's the search result if you click on that tag: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?filters=1300_0_0_0_0

I'm not saying every retroclone must be well... a clone. But at least it should have something that reminds about D&D. For example I'm a big fan of Castles & Crusades which is not a 1:1 clone but a system inspired by Ad&d 1E and D&D 3E.
From what I see from this preview there is nothing reminding about D&D in this game, that's why I was asking which game was the inspiration for Numa.

Personally I believe that when a game has nothing to do with a pre-existing system from the past it can't be called OSR but "Old School Feeling" or something like that.
For example putting Numa inside the OSR section instead than Other System generates only confusion while the majority of the OSR games in the sections are retroclones or hacks.

Okay my friend, understood your words. So Numa is in the correct place, cause it has a "inspiration".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
