Colonial Freighter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A complete starship book, ideal for Cepheus Engine or other sc-fi RPGs.

On worlds with low-populations and few port facilities, any colonial supply ship has to carry with it a suite of cargo handling equipment. The Tharsis Aerospace Argosy is a premier example of this class of ship - the ‘colonial support vessel’ (CSV).

The Argosy has been designed to carry a varied mix of cargoes, from passengers to pallets cargo containers, out-sized industrial machinery, vehicles and various types of chemicals and fuels. It is able to land on a bare-rock landing pad and off-load its entire (and diverse) cargo where there are no port facilities. This 5,000-ton starship is fully deck-planned, and includes four variants, two scenario outlines and two new types of vehicles.

Includes:

  • 22 pages of detailed plans
  • example crew
  • the 10-ton workpod
  • a 6 wheeled ATV, the Dynacat
  • ship walk-through
  • complete barracks deckplan for the military variant
  • complete hospital deckplan for the medical variant
  • two scenario outlines featuring the Argosy

There are so many creative peaple generating fantastic supplements for RPGs but none of them seem to be able to conceive of spaceships as they will be. They will not be oceanliners levitated to the heavens. Unless the setting throws in gravity manipulation as mundane tech, down will always be in the direction of the main drive, not perpendicular to it. Think flying skyscrapers, not watercraft. Even with "grav plating" down would still be towards the main drive for safety reasons, since large rooms become elevator shafts of death if the ship needs to maneuver when the grav system is offline. I would love to see ship designs account for this basic fact. Such designs would help gritty campaigns set themselves apart from generic space opera fair.

I see your point, but Hostile is all about 'genre emulation' and so tries to follow the rules of spaceflight set out by that genre. That said people are designing ships you might like, including my colleague Ian Stead. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/210627/Ship-Files-Atticus-Class-Freelancer

Thanks for the reference. Ship looks reasonable, plus with its wedge shape almost all frontal hits would be glancing blows. The fins probably aren't neccesary, but don't hurt anything, could consider them as folded radiators. Have purchased the plans. Nice work on the mood of Hostile by the way. My RPG pals are gonna love it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
