Art by Julianne Griepp

From the creative mind behind Icarus: A Storytelling Game About How Great Civilizations Fall, comes Spenser Starke’s next project Alice is Missing, a silent role-playing game about the disappearance of Alice Briarwood, a high school junior in the small town of Silent Falls.

Developed by Hunters Entertainment and published & distributed by Renegade Game Studios, Alice Is Missing is a unique kind of roleplaying game in which players only communicate using their phones, sending text messages to each other as they unearth clues about what happened to Alice.

Immersive Storytelling Header

The game is played live and without verbal communication. Players inhabit their character for the entirety of the 90-minute play session, and instead of speaking, send text messages back and forth to the other characters in a group chat, as well as individually, as though they aren’t in the same place together.

Haunting beautiful, deeply personal, and highly innovative Alice is Missing puts a strong focus on the emotional engagement between players, immersing them in a tense, dramatic mystery that unfolds organically through the text messages they send to one another. Right at home with games like Life Is Strange, Gone Home, Oxenfree, and Firewatch, it’s designed to feel as much like an event-style experience as it does a role-playing game.

Text Message Example

Alice Is Missing runs over a single session of 2-3 hours, with 3-5 players. In the first 45 minutes, players create their characters, their relationships to Alice, and their ties with each other. The next 90 minutes are spent uncovering secrets and unearthing clues in an attempt to discover where Alice is, and who is behind her disappearance.

Though text messages seem to be the most common mode of communication in our modern era, they are rarely utilized as a storytelling medium.

The integration of texting into the gameplay unlocks a brand new way to play RPGs that is unlike anything you’ve likely experienced before. It’s personal, immersive, and perfect for remote play.

When i try and print the cards 2 sided one side seems the wrong way round so that the backs don’t align with the correct card. Do I do something in printer settings ? Has anyone else had this problem?

I got the Roll20 version of the game in a giveaway. Do I need this PDF to run the Roll20 module?

For those asking about how to distribute the cards when playing remotely, while not ideal, taking a picture and sending them to players is an option.

I was Wondering about being able to use the pdf for a remote discord game? How could I use it? Or would it be better to buy the Roll20?

How is the replayability of this game? say if I wanted to be the facilitator for a few different groups of people, or even just rotate the facilitator roll? I'm strongly considering the roll 20 version of the game.

Oh, it's incredibly high. I've run it over a dozen times, and it's almost always fantastic.

I received this as a gift. It turns out that the product description is misleading in a couple of ways and my gift-giver now regrets making the purchase. First, you don't find out until after you make the purchase that the game can "get into heavy or difficult content" such as "violence, sexual violence, date rape, teenager-adult relationships, partner abuse, problems at home, victim blaming, and death." The instruction booklet says that, but the product description doesn't. X-cards and Lines & Veils are better than nothing, but they're opt-out mechanisms instead of opt-in mechanisms (informed prior consent). That is, someone has to raise the topics before anyone can say they don't want those topics raised. If my gift-giver had seen that description before she bought the game, she would have gotten something else.

Second, it calls itself a silent RPG, and yet it includes a playlist and voicemail. I've lost most of my hearing, but my old gaming group hasn't. A "silent"...See more

The PDF is just the digital version of what is provided in the Box. You can still use it for Discord games however. The Roll20 Edition of the game can be found on the Roll20 marketplace, and facilitates online play remotely with folks.

Is it possible to play this in-person without using the resources on Roll20? I know the physical box will have cards, but how do you play with just this PDF?

I bought this with the intent to use it with FoundryVTT, which is kind of like Roll20. I noticed that the Character and Motive cards are available as single images from your website, but the Location and Suspect cards are only available as a print-and-play PDF. Would you consider uploading the Location and Suspect cards as individual images to DriveThruRPG so that purchasers can more easily play online in non-Roll20 VTTs?

Is there any practical way to play this at distance other than roll20? Like if a webcam was pointed down at the cards and an online voice recorder was used for the messages, would that be enough? I realize an app is coming but ideally I would like to play this for Halloween which is kind of soon.

Side question, when the app does come out, is there an estimate on cost?

Online voice record would be fine. But cards need to be 'issued' to players at time intervals, which makes a 'cloud-based card assigning' system pretty vital. We're continuing to work on ways to bring the game to people who are not interested in Roll20, however, it just takes some time and careful development to make sure we do it right.

I encourage you to join us on our discord as there is a lot of great discussion on ways to play the game that don't involved Roll20, and use elements like Discord Bots and Templates to enable remote play.

I've been playing this on Roll 20, but wanted to get this game for my little sister who plays games in person with her friends. What is included in this DriveThruRPG purchase? Are all the printables available to her? How easy is it to create your own cards etc?

So I'm really intrigued by this game, but I was wondering how the mechanics of it change when it is played online instead of in person? Do I need to come up with something to be able to circumvent the usage of physical cards, or are there specific tweaks for this already available?

There is a Roll20 version with everything you need, as well as tutorials on youtube on exactly what you need to do on Roll20 to make everything work. I highly suggest it! It's been very simple to use.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
