Ominous Crypt of the Blood Moss

A mad mage | A defiled crypt | A cosmic fungal entity

They say Ursodiol the Mad was the greatest mind to have ever breached the great Cosmic Void; that he looked beyond the myriad stars and the blackest depths of the hells into the swirling magical protoplasmic morass that is the beginning and end of everything. When they found his corpse, so hideously changed was it that it drove those who saw it to madness and despair. Fearful, they entombed him in the crypt of his forbears and sealed it tight. But little did they know that Ursodiol brought back something with him from his cosmic journey. And it is hungry...

Ominous Crypt of the Blood Moss is an old-school style adventure primarily designed for use with Old-School Essentials and other iterations of the Basic/Expert rules for the original fantasy roleplaying game.

A dungeon crawling adventure of cosmic horror for characters of 2nd to 4th level!

"Ominous Crypt of the Blood Moss is a great little adventure. It uses a familiar, enjoyable recipe with a twist on a few of the ingredients, while it is crafted with love and attention." - Antonios S, RPG.net

"There’s a LOT to look at and poke at and clean and examine in each room. That’s good." - Rated "The Best" by Bryce Lynce, tenfootpole.org

"I like that "solving" the adventure has visible consequences for the village outside the dungeon, and the presentation is top notch, making it very easy to run." - Giuseppe Rotondo, axianspice.blogspot.com

"Ominous Crypt of the Blood Moss is easy to prepare and run, and relatively easy to adapt to a Game Master’s own campaign. The set-up of the scenario is a cliché, but Ominous Crypt of the Blood Moss takes that cliché in a challenging and creepy direction, to present an enjoyably weird and cosmic experience on a small scale." - Reviews from R'lyeh

Are you in medicine? Why Ursodiol otherwise?

Good question! My cat is currently ill with liver failure and was diagnosed around the time I wrote the adventure. It’s one of the medicines that she’s currently on.

Inspiration comes from odd sources…

Updated versions of the PDF files are now available - these include corrections to typos in the text. I've also added GM and player-facing maps in a .zip file.

Print files have also been updated, which will lead to print copies being unavailable until the new files are received via the printer - I may need to obtain new proofs before they go live, so please bear with me while these become available.

All the best,

Freddie

Hi Toby,

I think there are about five or so typos. Correcting these is on my to-do list! I will hopefully get them corrected soon. I am also planning on adding separate maps to the PDF download as well - everyone who has already purchased should get the updated files.

Best,

Freddie

The only difference is one is formatted to be spreads, the other as single pages. The content in both is otherwise the same!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
