Soulbound: Dark Industrial Fantasy

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Soulbound is tabletop game about wielding randomly generated, arcane weapons which are bound to one's spirit. It is set in the golden age of invention, a time plagued by giant fauna and corrupted demigods. As hunters of the inhuman it is your duty to slay these beasts.

In Soulbound players assume the role of Wielders, regular humans who have been bestowed unique weapons with supernatural powers. A Wielder is no one kind of person. They are heroes and villains, thieves and saints. The universe has granted a small population with these soulbound weapons, roughly every one in one-hundred people, but how each person chooses to use their gift is what determines their fate. Such people live in turmoil, shunned by those who fear their powers and controlled by those who wish to abuse them.

The game has been made with an original setting and unique rules for a complete product, no supplements necessary!

  • Played with Six-sided Dice - Soulbound is played using only six-sided dice. The rules are quick to learn, rolls are measured by counting a number of Successes, similar to predecessors like Shadowrun and Burning Wheel.

  • Billions of Weapon Combinations - Weapons, also known as Bonds, are randomly generated by rolling dice. From a list of 100 weapons, 3 distinct builds, and 36 arcane Powers there are literally billions of combinations, making each character’s weapon truly unique.

  • Organic Growth - Rather than progressing along a predetermined route characters in Soulbound grow organically. New magic powers are gained by slaying Corrupted enemies, and players must hand pick their own Skills and Tricks.

  • Hex-grid Combat - Soulbound is designed to be played on a hexagonal grid, with specific rules for fighting against many of the large beasts one will face. This isn’t necessary of course, the combat is just as fun in the mind’s eye if a Storyteller chooses to play it as such.

  • A Dark Fantasy - The plane is Solum is one wrought with struggle and despair. Humanity has, by matter of impending extinction, been forced into vertical cities with towering walls. Beasts which hide behind masks of bone, Deceivers, and shapeshifting demons, the Akuma, lurk in the shadows as an incomprehensible and ever present threat. These foes will not be easily slain, and players can expect to perish quickly if they are not well prepared.

  • The World of Solum - Soulbound takes place on the plane of Solum, a vast land which has been roughly divided into six nations. Primium, Uhyre, Agrewin, Qray Ralim, Rajan, and Sozo each possess their own culture to serve as the backdrop for endless adventures.

  • Hunting Houses and Trades - In lieu of traditional classes players may opt to join one of 3 hunting Houses. Each of these Houses then branches into 3 hunting Trades for a total of 9 Trades between all Houses. These academies provide indispensable hunting to gear to those who wish to brave the dangers outside of the walls.

  • Industrial Era - Soulbound takes place in an industrial golden age, where ingenuity is key for survival. In addition to the technological wonders offered by the hunting guilds players may purchase Upgrades for their weapons and build their armor sets piece by piece.

  • Arcane Abilities - By using their weapons players may conjure simple arcane Tricks, easily produced effects they’ve learned on their own, or devastating arcane Powers, gifted to them from another realm. When slaying especially dangerous foes characters even have a chance to become mutated by Corrupted energy, gaining all new abilities.

Awesome game!

A question, however.... Is there a table for "difficulty tiers"?

It mentions "Tier 1 and Tier 3" (pg. 103) but I can't find any table or anything for guidelines, or is it just simply whatever seems appropriate? What would be an idea of the max (Tier 6? Tier 9?)

Since i ordered a hardcopy, just a quick review here in the discussion section.
A very well designed and thought out book.
The layout is clean and very readable, nearly to none typos or other errors.
There are loads of illustrations for all kinds of gear, creatures, landscapes and other stuff. The illustrations range from ok-ish (faces) to gorgeous (nearly everything else).
The setting is very original and interesting and reminds me of a mix of Dark Souls, Dishonored, some Ghibli movies, Attack on Titan, Shadows of Esteren and other industrial age fantasy.
The system is a rather easy to use d6 pool system with some interesting and clever mechanics sprinkled in.
If you order from the website, the book itself comes with robust standard paper and a high-quality, sturdy cover.
I had some issues with ordering from the US to Europe, but the author was very, very helpful and kind. An absolute plus!
All in all Soulbound is one of the rare little RPG-gems i had the pleasure...See more

I have a question about the Vilis Coronum. Does the player gain all the powers of a horn, or do they gain them in order if they contract the same one over and over? i.e does a player with the Runic crown gain both the runic arm and body or just one of them?

Good question Justin! A player can use any of the powers listed under their Vilis Coronam as soon as they contract it. Thanks for asking!

HI Andi,

Great game! Any chance of a print on demand being released. I would love a printed version of this. I didn't come across this wonderful game until after the kickstarter.

Cheers,

Hey Tyler!

Glad you're enjoying it, thank you! There will be a hardcover version of the rulebook available for purchase in the coming months here. I'm currently working on getting all of the Kickstarter rewards delivered, but once those are shipped the books should be available for individual sale. With luck it'll be sometime next month. They'll be available through the website at www.soulboundrpg.com/shop-1 when the time comes. Thank you!

Happy hunting!

The way consume is written leaves some details a bit vague so I had some questions about that mechanic

1) If a deceiver injures someone can they use consume on them anytime they want for the rest of combat or is it just the follow-up action?

2) When a deceiver succeeds on a consume action does it follow-up with further consume actions on the same turn or does it need to spend actions and AT like the rest of the special actions?

3) If the deceiver does need actions and AT for consume is the wielder it is targeting impeded in anyway sitting it's turn while suffering from a consume chain?

4) If they are not what happens if they move away during a consume chain?

5) If a wielder is injured by the last action on the deceiver's turn can the deceiver consume the weilder on it's next turn?

Hey Blakelee!

Thank you for asking, good questions! An updated version of the book with corrections and clarifications will be made available soon here on Drive Thru RPG, but until then I will happily clear the water! The "Consume" rule got a little rework since many of its parts were unclear. So, going in order...

1) It's meant to be used as a follow-up ability, immediately after a target has been Injured (while they're caught off guard and wounded).

2) The consumption continues until the target passes their Tier 3 Agility save or they are consumed alive! It doesn't quite read this way right now, but it will in the newer version. That all happens for the price of a single AT.

3) Since the whole "Consume" ability will be resolved on the Deceiver's Turn the hunter is not impeded in any way!

4) Same thing, it is all resolved on the Deceiver's Turn.

5) This Deceiver is always able to follow up immediately after...See more

Thank you for answering earlier,

Two more quick questions

1) Do paired and/or dual wielded weapons use both of your equipment slots?

2) You get your full stats bonus on combo weapons correct? You just can't use stacking weapon modifiers unless the dual wielded weapon is also a combo weapon?

Hey Janice,

Sorry for the late reply:
1) Paired/dual wielded weapons do use both of your slots, yes! Assuming, that is, that you would like to use both of them at the same time in combat
2) You do get your full bonuses on combo weapons, yep! Combo weapons usually have a low (-R) recovery modifier though, since they use the lower value between the two weapons.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers!

Hey Jeff!

Great question, and the answer is yes! I am currently working on printing and shipping physical copies for all of the Kickstarter backers. Once that dies down the game will be available as a POD through the website at www.soulboundrpg.com. So, around late August is my guess. Thank you!

Happy hunting!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
