Five Torches Deep: Homesteads

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Build your home away from the dungeon!

Ideal for farming, producing helpful goods, recruiting specialized retainers, building a community, and carousing.

FTD: Homesteads has subsystems for:

  • Alternate XP
  • Farming
  • Town life
  • Region and town generators
  • Hooks and tools (including a massive 1d100 Carousing table)

Designed for Five Torches Deep but compatible with any classic six-stat adventure game. All new original (and cute!) artwork by the incredibly talented Anandah Janae. Homesteads is an ideal module for breaking up the constant stress of dungeon delving, building relationships with the locals, and serving as a perfect excuse to burn lots of gold in improving the crusty tavern!

Does this come with the same options for PDF layout that the core does? Having the mobile layout has been a huge boon for me lately, makes it so much easier to read on the go.

Currently it does NOT however each column on the page neatly fills a vertical phone aspect ratio. So not nearly as smooth as the core book but much better than many PDFs.

This looks amazing! I'm trying to put something together that will interest my son, and I'm guessing this isn't a good place for a noob to start! After a few days of rereading the whole PDF, I finally found a phrase that stuck out because it made no sense to my inexperienced brain. "six mile hex". So after a day of googling, I figured out how to set up the map! Wahoo! So now I understand the farm plots and the maping, but I'm clueless on how to start the structures. How many structures fit on a plot? How much does it cost for the initial build? How do I populate the structures? Are these things covered in another pdf?

The initial outline of the homestead isn't included because we felt that the GM will likely have a point to start in mind. The PC party isn't FOUNDING this village, they're just happening upon it and helping it to grow (the classic Western trope of strangers rolling in to town and helping the locals).

So the easiest place to start is that all of the initial structures are built and at tier 0 or 1. The structures can be placed based on what's logical or using the puzzle cube generator in the back. This supplement focuses on what the party gains out of helping out the existing homestead and expanding it, not necessarily mapping or planning it out. So, have fun with it or randomize generate it, whatever makes sense for your game.

Let us know if you have other questions, happy to help.

Am I doing the math right, a single farmer makes enough good in a day to feed only themselves? So what happens in the winter since they cannot grow surplus to store? Or does the game kind of handwave that around for mechanical balance since it interacts with the other systems?

That one acre is including winter shortages / vegetables that are harvestable in winter time. So yes basically each person dedicated to farm is self sustaining for the whole year; but you would need more people working larger than one acre per year, or alternate food sources, in order to sustain the homestead.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
