Warhammer Fantasy Role Play : The Horned Rat - Enemy Within Campaign Director's Cut Volume 4

ADD TO WISHLIST >

‘My Friends in Change, we have sown glorious chaos but to bring the Time of Changes we must act as one under a Champion In Shadows.’

The Horned Rat is the fourth volume of the revised and updated Director’s Cut of the Enemy Within, one of most highly regarded roleplaying campaigns ever written. Building on the dramatic events at the end of Power Behind the Throne, recruiting your brave heroes into the service of the city of Middenheim for more drama and intrigue.

In the penultimate volume of the five-part series of grim and perilous Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay adventures, the tables are turned as enemies that have pursued the Characters since the beginning of the epic campaign are forced to defend themselves. The time is right to uncover their schemes and break apart their organisation. The Characters cannot afford to relax their guard and celebrate their victories, as a new threat emerges from beneath their feet.

The Horned Rat Includes:

The fourth part of the Enemy Within campaign, conceived by legendary WFRP writer Graeme Davis with contributions by a team of talented WFRP writers.

A toolkit to exploring Middenheim’s complex undercity, a vast environment filled with hazards and intrigues.

A series of investigations dealing with the implications of the action in Power Behind the Throne and leading to the realisation of a new threat, far greater than anything the Characters have faced in their previous adventures.

Descriptions of an ongoing and deepening crisis in the Empire, to be resolved in the final instalment of the Enemy Within campaign.

The Enemy Within is the campaign all roleplayers should play at least once in their lives, making The Horned Rat an essential purchase for gamers.

The pdf has no bookmarks, diminishing its usability quite a lot. Please, dear Cubicle 7, would you mind fixing that?

Does this make for a good stand-alone? Is it too tied to Enemy Within to untangle? Can it be played by itself? Will I ever stop with these repetitive questions? Probably not.

It could be used that way. A couple of the smaller scenarios progress TEW's plot but they can either be omitted or adapted. The main thing you'd need to do is justify getting the characters employed the Middenmarshals.

I can't answer your other question? :)

Isn't the title of this book a bit spoiler heavy? Surprise! You will discover that the main enemy is...Skaven?!

I always thought Something Rotten in Kislev was the next release after Power Behind the Throne. Looks like it's being skipped over entirely for this instead. Weird.

It's been the plan all along. SRiK was shoe horned into The Enemy Within when Game's Workshop pulled the plug on RPG development. The Horned Rat was the original plan for part five back in the day, so the director's cut is resurrecting the original plan. We're also likely to get a modified Empire in Flames (now Ruins)

Yeah still seems like a shoe horn. So the original SRiK had hobgoblins and zombies. This has skaven? Neither seems to fit the flavour of humans falling to chaos and plotting royal downfalls. Anyhoo, thanks for the history lesson, still gonna pass on this one.

Somethign Rotten in Kislev was a fun adventure of certain doom typical of the author and about as useful for running in the enemy within campaign as any random D+D scenario. Both times I ran the campaign I skipped it as being unrelated and irrelevant and almost certain to turn all pc's into zombies. The Horned Rat certainly seems to be part of the same plot and so will fit into the overall campaign better I suspect, although we won't know until the final part is avialble. Can't be a worse fit than Kislev

That's my view. I've only read SRiK and my playthrough as a player and a GM it was skipped. I don't think there's anything wrong SRiK, it just doesn't fit. This is a GW fault, not Ken Rolston, as GW made the executive descision to add it to TEW to get the project finished since the RPG department was getting shut down.

I am enjoying what I've read so far in The Horned Rat; it feels like a nice blend of SoB, DotR and PBtT.

Unpopular opinion, but Something Rotten In Kislev was my favourite WFRP scenario - a masterpiece of black comedy and well structured pacing. Even the pre-generated characters were hilariously fun. I do get that it was incongruous with the rest of the Enemy Within campaign, however, and do totally accept that The Horned Rat makes more narrative sense in the series. That said, I would request that Cubicle 7 do release an updated version of Something Rotten in Kislev as a standalone campaign sometime.

It was my favourite too, miles ahead of that terrible ending.

Well the setting for the adventure is the city but yes, a totally pointless preview for sure.

The synopsis page would have made a lot more sense since it actually lists what occurs in the adventure.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
