Why choose a modular terrain system?

Modular terrain systems have some key features that are pretty compelling. For starters, the pieces are interchangeable. The tile roofs you built with your Stone Building Set, for example, can be used just as well for your Tudor buildings. The end cap pieces provided help blend the textures together where necessary. Floors will be completely interchangeable, and end caps help blend the textures together. Modular builds allow assembling sections of your final setup, giving you easier access to all of the different areas, or allowing you to incrementally piece together a floor plan as it is being explored. Modular terrain breaks down and stores relatively flat, too. A shoebox may be all you need to store a complete dungeon build.

What's the best way to get started?

There's a list of materials required above. The sets come with instructions for each of the pieces, and there are cutting guides that make it clearer where you need to be cutting or scoring. If you are really into the hobby, a Silhouette brand cutting machine can really make quick work of cutting out all of the pieces. Cutfiles are provided for everything - just load the printed page into your cutter, load the cutfiles and go!

It can be overwhelming if you are new to papercrafting. Starting with a simpler building (especially some of Paper Realms' freebies!) is a great way to practice. A good rule to follow for modular terrain is to start small. Rather than thinking "I need to build hundreds of posts and walls!" think instead "I would love to a cool room for a key encounter to take place" and build just what's needed for that. The gratification of being able to use what you've built right away really helps keep things going. Having one complete room is a lot better to start with than trying to make one of everything without a purpose, and never finishing. After that first room is done, build another set of pieces, and now you can set up even more encounters. You'll have a large terrain set before long, but you won't have to wait until the end to start using it.

What if I'm having a lot of trouble?

Have patience, and don't go it alone! There are great papercrafting communities online that you might want to join if you're seeking advice, some motivation or even a little camaraderie. Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
