Shadowrun: Cutting Black (Plot Sourcebook)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

TOTAL DARK

Voice scream in the darkness. Voices of the lost drift through the night. Their sound is despair, sorrow, and terror. The noise grinds at your soul, but only thing worse than listening to the chorus of pain is joining it.

The world is changing. Desperate times require desperate measures, and the ground beneath your feet will shake when those measures are meted out. Hold on, buckle up, and try to survive. Parts of the world are cutting to black—so keep your guard up, be prepared, and don’t let the dark consume you.

Cutting Black is a campaign book to help launch players and gamemasters into Shadowrun, Sixth World. With breaking news and world-shaking events, it provides material to carry players through months of games. If they can survive that long.

It's a proGression wIthin the timeline. Between this book and neo anarchists, people have a good starting point for their own maJor campaign setting.
Further reading Of the timEline that is surely somewhere on the web now....
a imaginative individual can build a fully immersive setting.

This is a fiction book, a collection of short stories. Although it may give you ideas it is of no use to running a game. Can publishers get over using games to put out short fiction, or to pad game books with it.

Is there anywhere that CGL describes what to expect for an Adventure vs a Plot Source book? I'm not sure what to expect with this book and if it's close enough to a published adventure to be run out of the box.

I am not buying this. I bought too much CCL crap and am tired of being taken. I love Shadowrun but I will wait untill the licence is awarded to a responsible professional gaming company.

okay was a very tough book to review. the basic overview of this book would be cool but ultimately useless. as a story device the books pretty damn good and for 22 bucks im not too upset at the price but comparing it to previous books of this type the deep shadows this book is pretty garbage. i think it hits well the story beats giving you a feel of whats going and quite frankly if you see this book half off id say pick it up just for a somewhat engaging read. the main issue that alot of people arent mentioning is that unlike other deep shadow books this one is actually half a book. the story half to be specific, and while it does that well and brings some parts of the shadows up to speed in places like the UK. there are no rules anywhere in the book except the very last page. someone in the discussions mentions theres not inhabitation or materialization power for the bugs but to be honest thats about the easiest thing in any statblock to fix. that very last page gives you stat blocks for 3 types of bugs. but...See more

Utter worthless garbage. The plot is trash. The editing is gabage. A single page of actual rules and CGL still can't get through it without a mistake. The Insect Spirits in the book lack Inhabitation and Materialization powers, with just Astral Form remaining. Without them they don't have a way to act on the physical plane except to appear as an insubstantial image. All three listed forms lack them, so even the extra dangerous Alphas are nothing. I guess they just spooked Detroit to death.

I have not bought the book. But from a review pointed out a Military lingo. "REPEAT" would be, yes, call for successive bombardment. In this case you can say " I say again" to make sure they get the importance of the message.
I'd say cut the slack, since writers and publishers are probably mostly consisted of civilians, albeit it sometimes can be cringe worthy.

I just found it weird that the author put so much emphasis on the military lingo (Like, every other word was jargon. Nobody I work with speaks like that), but made easy mistakes like that. I don't think there was a need for that much "realism," it was distracting and there wasn't anything to the characters other than that they used military jargon.

“Alpha Two-Zero, this is Command, maintain communications protocol!” “Visual scanning the dirt" “Focus, Two-Zero. Stay on mission. You will get out of this!"

The author would switch between using "say again" and "repeat", so I think they were taking cues more from media portrayals than IRL (Which isn't necessarily bad). Like, parts of it were cartoony/over-the-top (“Don’t ask this of me, First Sergeant. I’ve served twenty-three years. My time is up in six days and a wake-up.” - it's always right before retirement, huh?), and I can enjoy that, but overall it came across as taking itself...See more

No, I totally see your point, that is why I'm planning to get this at a deep discount later on. Besides, I still got whole lot of materials from SR5 that needs my attention.

The weird thing is, I'm thinking that if it was 19.99 it'd be a perfect price (With probably 39.99 for a physical copy). Price psychology is weird.

There is apparently a subset of people (wrongly) claiming this is some kind of end-times book. Don't listen to them. I won't comment on editing 'talent', or even if it's worthwhile, but the wild armchair expositions about its contents are usually simply wrong, or put out as a reinforcement of their own biases without any basis.

Feel free to look up any words that seem too complicated.

Eh, folks complained that metaplots were being too repetitive/didn't change anything. Now the same folks are complaining that the metaplots are changing too many things! Some people are impossible to please.

Considering that CGL is at it again and still isn't paying some of their artists (The newer, less experienced ones anyways. It wasn't even an "exposure" deal, they flat-out violated contracts), I don't feel too good about buying it, but it is a good read. The artist payment thing is industry-wide, but it's still sketchy. I think all that CGL learned from 2011 is to avoid picking on folks who have sway in the community. I doubt Topps is going to do anything about them this time, either, so now I gotta go and look up all the products under that label so I can avoid them.

Irregardless of all that! I did enjoy the book- I can separate the quality of work of the writers from the integrity of corporate parasites. You should also check out the Shadowcasters' Network's podcasts...See more

You do understand that the book was out for hours when you posted this comment? Some of the promotional materials had fights with horrors in them. Or, at least humanoid tentacle monsters. I haven't seen comments like that since the book actually came out.

Speculation about a future book that is heavily promoted with teasers is normal. It isn't fair to insult the intelligence of fans who partook in that. Games like Five Nights at Freddy's build their brand around intense speculation behind the meaning of snippets of information.

Let me guess editing is up to the same standard as the core rule book? Oh and from the review I've seen it sounds like this book takes the setting through the Apocalypse and leaves in rotting afterwards.

I mean between VITAS one and two, Two separate matrix crashes, the Great Ghost Dance, The birth of AI and E-ghosts. The CDF nanite virus. The Shadowrun world has always been running from one apocalypse to the next. And with good reason. The horrors are coming and they're coming way too soon

Last time I checked the Horrors were scrapped because Earthdawn and Shadowrun are no longer linked now that they are each owned by different companies.

Bah never gave a crap about licenses and who owns what. The games were written together sharing a world at different times. When the games were created they were meant to be together. so if you want to disregard the cannon cause of copyright you can but that's just rediculous to be honest. Horrors have always been a great point of shadowrun something so incideous and silently deadly no one knows but a few

SR is actually the one that diverged from the original storyline to follow transhumanism with 4e and subsequent editions. They also wanted to steer clear from anything that could muddle their IP, abandoning anything in the shared universe - which weakened the how's and why's of the SR magic background. It would be nice if they went back and tried to shore-up the horror aspect that was left behind, this would give them an opportunity to take the game back towards the direction it was originally going.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
