The d6 Hack

WHAT’S THIS?

The d6 Hack (TDSH) is a traditional TableTop RolePlaying Game (TTRPG), played with paper, pencils and dice. It uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Games as a base. But it also builds upon the special version of that game called THE BLACK HACK (TBH).

TDSH differs from TBH in that it only uses the common 6-sided die to play the game. It can be used to play adventures designed for the original game, but only requires three six-sided dice to play those adventures.

WHY USE THIS BOOK?

TDSH is written especially for newcomers to the TableTop RolePlaying Hobby. People who want to try a traditional TTRPG without a lot of expenditure on books or special dice. There is an expanded version of these rules available with further advice and examples for complete beginners. This book is for:

• Expert Referees who want to use these rules to introduce new players to the hobby.

• Players in a game run by a Referee who owns the full rulebook - to use as a quick reference at the table.

• Expert referees who might want to run a classic TTRPG but are currently without their equipment and dice. (To be honest, once they’ve read these rules an expert Referee could probably run them from memory.)

Oh, yes, I've even thrown in some pre-gens and a short adventure to get you started!

Hi Simon,

I recently purchased this game and I'm very much enjoying it. I did have a question about gaining spells. The rules state that a 1st level Priest or Conjuror starts with 2 spells in their spellbook. How does a spellcaster gain new spells? I know the amount of spells that can be memorized goes up every level. But I couldn't find in the rules how new spells are obtained after 1st level. Thanks!

Thanks for your kind comments.

Priests and Conjurors gain one spell of the player’s choice when they go up a level.

They can also copy spells from Scrolls and Spellbooks they find on their adventures into their own spell book.*

This covered in the “Full” rules but I seem to have missed it out of the little black book version - good spot!

Thanks.

* Just like the “classic” games of this type.

Thanks again for the kind comments.

If you have the time, could you copy them into a review? Reviews count towards my “numbers”. Comments (however nice) don’t.

Thanks!

This is a nice ruleset. I've goofed around with my own D6 hack but never got the courage to try and publish. Your rules validated some of my own thoughts. I'll have to check out the your other products.

Just what I wanted for solo play and to introduce my family to high fantasy role playing.

The mechanics are fully explained in such a few words. More than once I found myself saying "Oh *THAT'S* what they mean!"

For solo play, I wanted a game I could make my own and add my own flavor. That's more easily done with more players. Solo, it's easy to get off track or stay too long on an unimaginative track. The d6 Hack keeps it simple for me so I can add all my own complexity.

For introducing this to family, it's as straightforward as it gets. The best part is it's a great way to learn mechanics and concepts usable in more advanced games. It will be very easy for me and my family to add more subtly as they nail down this system.

It isn't a d20 game, though. That works for me. When I started role-playing solo, I looked for a bell-curve distribution of die-roll results. The d6 Hack was what I was looking for.

Finally, I purchased the book from...See more

I picked this one up and had it printed before a long holiday. It was pretty much my constant companion for a week. I really like a lot of what Simon has done here. Awhile back I introduced my players to Maze Rats. I really liked the simplicity of the 2d6/3d6 with Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic. And Simon has done something similar for the d20 roll under a Ability Score that defines so much of the TBH hacks.

He's done away with the Usage Die mechanic, I think this is acceptable. A lot of players seemed to feel it was too fiddly. He's also done away with simplified ranges of TBH (Close, Nearby, etc.), I am a bit less happy about this as there are times where the text reads "Nearby" capitalized as such it looks like a rule, but there is no clarification what the term means. I like how he advises the GM to use a "common sense" approach, but just feel the capitalization of Nearby should be removed or explained a bit more. He also included four pre-gen characters, some might find...See more

Hi Simon, could you make more pages available in the Full page preview - the current 4 pages don’t show anything of the game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
