8-Bit Fantasy: Fungal Kingdom Adventures

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to 8-Bit Adventures! Do you yearn for a simpler time, when video games scrolled right and you only had to deal with 2 buttons at a time? An era where blocky, colorful, vaguely recognizable shapes made up heroes that battled odd and often confusing villains with little to no context? Then Fat Goblin Games has you covered!

This product line is designed to take a nostalgic look at the iconic video games of the past and bring those adventures to life in your 5th Edition Fantasy campaigns with all-new options. Each volume will include monsters, magic items and maybe more! The names have been changed, but the flavor remains the same to ensure that the references are easy to see. Each volume will describe a different game world, each inspired by a classic game sure to inspire nostalgia in even the most hardened of veterans.

This volume covers the incursion of the Turtle Legions into the peaceful Fungal Kingdoms. The Turtle Legions have a variety of lethal troops at their disposal, ranging from the lowliest CR 1⁄2 wrenchy raccoons all the way up to the imposing Turtle King himself, weighing in at a whopping CR 15. Most of the monsters included present optional variants to help encompass the vast array of foes found across the many incarnations of the Fungal Kingdom. These foes provide a wealth of options to challenge parties of any level.

Unfortunately for the hapless residents of the Fungal Kingdom, there are no plucky plumbers available to save the day. This means that your PCs are going to have to step up and help out! Luckily there are a variety of helpful items available, from the ubiquitous enlarging mushroom and fire-throwing flower to the rare and powerful resurrection mushroom. Everything you need to include these flavorful items in 5th Edition Fantasy Game can be found in this volume.

I just picked this up a few weeks back and read it cover to cover in about 2 nights and loved it. It's mostly monsters and treasures, plus a series of encounters that highlight each of the monsters (and likely reward one or more of the treasures). While this could easily appear as a bit light on content for the price point, I can assure you it's the opposite.

The quality of the monster designs are fantastic: they've got art, often come with multiple options or fun variants to mix them up, and as far as I can tell all the monster math lines up making them full-fledged additions to the 5E game system. There are several that include Legendary Actions and the like, too, so you really are getting a huge variety. The magic items do double-duty in capturing the "feel and tone" of the source material while adhering to 5E rules perfectly as well. That's an astounding feat, and knowing this comes from a Pathfinder release originally, it's telling that the design team knows full-well the particulars...See more

Proof of Delivery? And yeah I agree they did a great job at capturing the feel and tone of the source material greatly while using the mechanics and whatnot of the system. Also don't forget besides magic items, monsters, and its own short little adventure. It also includes maps that do not look too bad either and could even be recycled for other campaigns if you're not a good mapmaker. I do wish there was an expansion of it and while there was one for the Pathfinder version for the Fungal Kingdom stuff it was mostly a new magic item that makes you a ghostbuster and a magic spell to summon a go kart which while both still great I would also want to see stuff added from other games in the source material not just in terms of creatures or NPC's but perhaps racial options and new locations as well.

By 5E you mean D&D 5E correct? Just checking to be sure, just really want to do a campaign centered around the world of the famous plumber in red.

Awesome, though a lot of the hit points are bigger than I thought they would be especially the CR for some of the enemies though I imagine it's to reference how some of them are supposed to be invincible/obstacles. And also I guess to balance with the power-ups. Ever thought of making any add ons for this for more Mario enemies or even stuff based on the Mario RPG's?

Like I said in a review I had a session a month or so back where against a "Flying Evil Fungi", and several regular Evil Fungi, and a few Wind-Up Bombs. Though it took a bit too long cause not every character had bludgeoning except the Barbarian with their weapons to take advantage of their damage weaknesses. And also because they didn't throw the Bombs around at other enemies as improvised weapons much. And Goombas which Evil Fungi are based on are supposed to be taken down in like one hit or like a couple hits depending on the game. So a couple of my players had complaints about that.

Very interesting product. I purchased your Pathfinder version even though I haven't played pathfinder in years. Then I saw you did a 5e conversation. Thumbs up. I'd like to see maybe some custom class archetypes to go with this product.

Love All the 8 bit games. I love being able to mix and match the Armor and Weapons. The idea that the fire plants are spells. In my mind I can mix match stuff from here build a multi layered cartoon adventure combining Centurian(Adaptive weapons), M.A.S.K.(Basically Use Various Spell themes per Mask basically Marvel's Mandarins ring) I have ideas

Absolutely! But tell your friends about this product. The more it sells, the more likely we are to do more!

On that note, which of our 8-bit products would you like to see converted next?

Oh trust me, I have been.

I'd love to see The Legend of Heroes, my friends and I have been doing a Twitch streamed campaign of similar flavour to that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
