GM's Map #85: Bookshop

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The smell of old paper hangs in the air of the quaint bookshop with it's bowed window and rows of wooden shelves, the proprietor sits behind his desk, reading from a leather-bound volume, like so many of those on the shelves of his shop. Occasionally he looks out over the rim of his spectacles to survey the store and assure himself that all is well. Setting aside his book, careful to mark his page, whenever a customer approaches him to make a purchase. The old man smiles, makes the sale and bids the customer 'Happy Reading' before returning to his own book.

Whether you are running an urban fantasy, modern investigative story, pulp game or horror scenario the bookshop is an ideal setting for scenes or even whole adventures. In this product, you will receive 3 versions of the map: Full colour, simple with grid and simple without the grid. In addition, the product comes with a PDF that includes some information on Bookshops and their history, a key to the map and 12 adventure hooks for various genres.

Sample Adventure hooks:-

3/. 'The Spy Who Read Too Much'

The shop is a 'front' for a ring of spies, with a password of asking for a specific edition of a specific book. A genuine book collector attempts to buy a copy. Shenanigans ensue.

(By M R McGowan)

10/. A Killer Title

The proprietor of the local independent bookshop has been found dead – murdered, in his office. All evidence points to someone who was looking for something very specific. The ransacking off the shop seems staged somehow as if whoever did it wanted to make it look like a random act of burglary gone wrong but the truth is they knew exactly what they were after and killing the owner seemed to be a part of their plan, not an unfortunate escalation. What deadly secrets were in the book that was taken, and who wants to make sure those secrets don't get out?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
