Underground Temple

Once, far before the memories of all races, a great Goddess known as  Chaos created the universe. It was a beautiful, and terrible place then;  unpredictable, wild, and rich with opportunity. But, as the races aged,  they came to know their Goddess’s husband—Order.

He  bestowed upon the mortals the concept of future, and taught them the  importance of sacrifice. Eventually, through the teachings of both their  gods, the mortals learned that they could shape the world around them,  and that—by walking the fine balance between both of their  creators—create a liveable world. One that was predictable, yet also  wild enough to still hold new opportunities, and wonder.

But,  as the mortals learned the vital balance of both their creators, they  slowly forgot those who had taught it to them. Temples which had been  raised in honour of Chaos, and later—Order—fell into neglect, and  disrepair. Eventually both gods vanished from the memories of mortals,  and their children rose to take their places, walking the many planes of  existence, and adding further complexity to the mortals lives...

This  temple is one of the many which have been forgotten. Raised by primeval  peoples to honour Order, and bless him with symbolic sacrifices, it’s  one of the last sacred places to have survived the changes in the world  around it. Though capped by crumbling ruins, the vastness of this great  temple is concealed deep underground, where monks once lived, and locals  came to pray.

However, though it’s original purpose may  have been forgotten, its location has not. Recently rediscovered, new  inhabitants lurk its halls—inhabitants who would rather be left alone…

Adventure Seeds

  • A surviving mercenary from a legal excavation has paid you to save  his friends. They were working for a wizard to recover artefacts from  the underground temple when a strange mist fell over the land, and  everyone fell asleep. None of them have woken up since, and if they  aren’t helped, they will die from the coma—but anyone who breathes the  mist for too long, receives the same fate. He and the other survivors  will pay you handsomely for the rescue.

  • You met a young scholar  on the road, bloodied and burned slightly. She begs you for help—she  was in a team studying the ruins, but was attacked by a group of  mercenaries being led by a wizard sent to destroy the temple and steal  the artefacts. They killed their guards, and she doesn’t know if the  rest of the scholars survived, having fled via the river—but the temple  must not be destroyed! Who knows how much ancient knowledge lies within,  never to be found again… (the scholar’s eyes go dreamy at this, but he  offers you the coin of those funding the dig for the rescue).   Inside  the temple, the wizard and his mercenaries have kept the other scholars  alive as leverage, in case anyone returns.

  • You encounter an  injured old man on the road. He was attacked while trying to find a way  in to a hidden temple filled with cultists—cultists who have kidnapped  children from the local village, one of which was his grandchild, who he  was trying to save.   He begs your party to go in and rescue the  children for him, as he no longer can. He offers to tell you the  location of hidden treasure if you do, and gives you a map showing the  main entrance to the ruins.

Inside the temple, the cultists are  really a group of people who have been living for several generations in  isolation, as a hidden, underground community with their children.  While this change initially happened to avoid bandits (and taxes), the  village has since developed strange—but mostly harmless—practices, due  to the obscurity of their existence.   In reality, the old man is a  wizard, who killed two of their guardsmen before retreating. As a result  of this, if anyone tries to enter the isolationists will be inclined to  attack, assuming they are somehow connected to the man who attacked  them—after all, few others know of their location, and it has been years  since they had visitors.

The wizard wants to gain  access to the bottom of the temple, where great treasure is stored as  part of the sacrifices once given to the forgotten god.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
