Isolated Desert Well

An isolated forest well,  surrounded by lush greenery and the crumbling ruins of a courtyard. The  spring beneath it is so plentiful that its water overflows; feeding much  of the land below it.  But the water is tainted by the bones of many creatures which have died there—for something terrible lives beneath…

Adventure Seeds

  • Reading over the journal of her grandfather, a young woman has hired  your party to guard her while she finds a treasure he lost on one of his  adventures—diamonds, hastily dropped down an isolated forest well,  while besieged by Orcs. They lie at the bottom, sparkling like stars.  But a large and ancient lizard-like creature has made the cave system  below its home—and it does not take kindly to visitors.

  • An  elf who is both scholar and pilgrim has paid your party to guard him  while he journeys to a site he believes he has identified as the meeting  place of two legendary lovers; mythicised for centuries by his people.  The courtyard of which he speaks lies within the heart of a wild and  uncharted forest, filled with ancient ruins from various crumbling  civilizations.

But when you arrive, you find a large, undead dragon  guarding it; with explicit orders not to let anyone enter. What truths  does the one who put it there wish none to know? It seems there are old  bloodstains, marring the courtyard beyond it. There is also a journal,  in an oiled, leather bag, stashed away at the bottom of the well, on  some rocks.

  • Your party has heard rumour of a mysterious young  woman, who waits by a well in the centre of a crumbling ruin, within  the forest. It is whispered she gives great treasure to those who can  answer her riddle—but those who cannot, she kills.

Arriving at the  well, your party see a woman with blonde hair, clad in shining silver  armour designed in the imitation of scales. Her eyes are a fierce green,  and she has a challenging half smile upon her lips, while she languidly  leans against the well. There is a sword at her waist, and her casual  ease tells you she is very familiar with its use.

“Well,” She asks,  “Have you come to answer my riddle?” If you say yes, she will ask it  (ex. “what walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and  three at night?”). If you answer it correctly, each party member gets to  choose one item (and one item only) from her hoard beneath the well.  But, if you get the riddle wrong, a large, green dragon emerges from  beneath the sands surrounding the courtyard—intent on eating his meal  (the point of the riddles, and their myth). If your party attempts to  enter the well without answering a riddle, he will also reveal himself.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
