Fortified Wilderness Outpost

Sharpened stakes line the exterior of high, stone walls. Murder holes have been tactfully incorporated into the circular room, and there is a  source of fresh water for those within—its entrance easily within sight of the arrow slits.

But, despite this outpost’s strong gate, it has one, fatal flaw—the well, below which lies a system of dark and bone-filled tunnels…

Adventure Seeds

  • Bandits have recently attacked and raided a nearby village. But one amongst their number was injured, and left behind—so the villagers were  able to discern where the rest of the party was going for the night.  Mourning of the loss of their precious heirlooms, the villagers have  paid your party to go to their location and reclaim their stolen goods.  But when your party arrives, you find the bandits dead, and trails of  blood and offal leading down into the well. What horrors lurk  below—something which could wipe out an entire group of seasoned killers  in one night?
  • A new kingdom has pushed into an area once  ruled by the free folk; uniting the barbarian tribes under a civilised  banner. Their new rulers have been extorting the tribes, charging  excessively high taxes from their farms and labour—and, worst of all,  they are forbidden to worship their gods; expected only to snivel and  bow to a single, “All Father”.

The tribes used to be free—free  to live or die how they pleased, without the petty rule of some  ink-nosed noble who had never ploughed a field—or felt warm blood wash  over his hands—in his life.   As a result, guerrilla groups have formed;  randomly attacking their new rulers in strategic locations for well  over a year now. But one of their secret outposts has been discovered,  and those within will surely die without your party’s help. They house  the sick and injured, and won’t be able to escape in time—so they  request your aid in defending against the incoming attack from their  conquerors.

But when the emissaries and their small group of soldiers arrive, they claim that they want to resolve the situation  peacefully. Without such high taxes, they couldn’t afford to educate  their people, or bring them medicine, or food when needed. They also  wouldn’t be able to defend against larger threats, which is the reason  they were conquered in the first place.
  • Your party has found a guarded outpost within the dangerous  wilderness, where they can survive the night in safety, thanks to the  guards who man it. However, during the night you hear a blood-chilling  scream as a man is dragged over the high walls and snatched away into  the darkness. There are terrible, gibbering creatures lurking out there,  and they will pick everyone off one by one. Your task is to survive. It seems possible, until whatever the creatures are begin to crawl out  from the well…   This whole time, a hoard of them have been growing  beneath you; breeding within the darkness.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
