Afterday: 2D6 Adventure After the Apocalypse

The end of the world has held a morbid fascination since time immemorial. Stories of The End can be found in the myths and oral traditions of many ancient cultures. In many of these stories, the world is destroyed (often as a byproduct of a war between deities or other supernatural entities) but remade anew or is returned to a chaotic or primordial state. Such stories are ubiquitous and use many commonly associated tropes, such as vast wastelands; predatory raiders (often mutated), and devices from the previous civilization held up as objects of desire and awe.

Now players using the 2D6 system can survive humanity’s worst day and perhaps help rebuild what has been destroyed. Afterday is based on the Mongoose 1st Edition 2D6 OGL system (which is itself based on The Original Science-Fiction Roleplaying Game first published in the late 1970s) and designed to create heroes struggling to survive and the strange new world around them. The rules include:

  • A variety of adventuring careers using an easy yet familiar lifepath and skill-acquisition system
  • An overview of ways to implement the destruction of human civilization
  • Tables to allow the referee to customize the odd cultures that may arise after the fall
  • A good selection of equipment, weapons, and armor, as well as a system to quickly create minor artifacts
  • New critters to kill (or be killed by) your heroes, including the terrifying zombie
  • A discussion of creating mutants and other posthumans
  • And to top it all off, a system for creating settlements, the last bastions of civilization and survival.

Afterday. It’s the end of everything…and the beginning of adventure.

I feel this is a great "realistic" post-apocalyptic game setting. The rules may be a little confusing for new players, as they are a little short, but you can find more detailed rules or in the Cepheus Engine SRD. There are plenty of rules and charts to set up an apoc campaign, complete with your own detailed settlement. What it doesn't have are extensive rules for mutants, but it gives a mention or discussion on it. Thanx

OK, what about mutants? Also, anything about mutant sentient animals, plants, what-have you? Can one play an AI robot, etc?

There's a brief section on Posthumans that allows you to create quick-and-dirty versions of mutants, mutated animals, and artificials. I kept it necessarily sparse because one, I don't like to step on the Ref's toes; and two, there are products out there such as Metamorphica that do detailed mutant creation far more elegantly. However, there should be enough there to get you started and maybe spark a few ideas.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
