Young Adults, Small Towns...

BIG ADVENTURE!

Kids on Bikes is a Collaborative World Building RPG set in small towns with big mysteries. Written and created by celebrated game designers Jon Gilmour (Dead of WinterAtari: Centipede/Missile Command/Asteroids) & Doug Levandowski (Gothic Doctor, Seven Minutes in Hell). Kids on Bikes is a rules-light storytelling system that gets players into the action fast

The Adventures of Kids on Bikes take place in small towns at any point in history before:

  • Everyone had a camera phone that could catch video of a Ghost
  • Use GPS to track a Homicidal Maniac roaming around town
  • Research an old creaky house in seconds using Google

Kids on Bikes takes place in a more mysterious time, where anything and everything *could* happen.

Kids on Bikes is a 60 page, rules-light, fast-paced storytelling game in the spirit of games like DREAD, Perseverant, MONSTERHEARTS, and other great indy titles. Kids on Bikes is perfect for game nights in which you want to get a game in RIGHT NOW.

Using stats like GRIT, CHARM, FIGHT, FLIGHT, BRAINS and BRAWN, you’ll jump into the action. Each skill is represented by a polyhedral die based on your character’s competence. More sides = better chance of success.

That being said, even low stats always have a chance of success, as any max result EXPLODES leading to an additional re-roll contributing to the results. Lower sided dice mean bigger chances of explosions!

Character Creation

Character creation has always taken a full day to get you ready to start your first session. Kids On Bikes wants you to get started now - without losing connection or attachment to the characters you make.

Featuring an immersive town-creation process, you and the other players will create the setting for your game as you create your characters. Though you’ll start with Tropes you know and love (like the Brilliant Mathlete, the Popular Kid, or the Loner Weirdo), you’ll flesh your characters out by developing their relationships to each other and the town!

Did we forget to mention powered characters?

Kids on Bikes also features a character co-controlled by all of the players at the table. Using aspects of the character from the GM, players will share narrative control over what the character does - and when they use their mysterious, dangerous powers!

Players will more than likely need their powers to get you out of a pinch, and as you play more, the powered character will get stronger and stronger!

But be careful… using powers comes with a cost...

Seems like the core book hardcover is out of print. Any idea if/when a hardcover Drivethru option will be available? Or a 2nd edition release?

Where is the description of the rules for bikes, please?

I feel very stupid right now. But honestly, I bought this book for the light source and the bike, so hopefully I just missed it.

Hey folks,

I have made a Game Keeper (Google Sheet) for Kids on Bikes RPG.

The Game Keeper includes:
Character Keepers
Worldbuilding Set-Up
Reference Sheets to Stats and Actions
and a GM Reference Tool

The Game Keeper allows a group of players to establish their characters and the world they want to play in. It allows them to track their important details during the game, take notes, create NPCs, a powered character, etc.

Steps:
1) Click on the link below.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v9jnwLc583FMQBqb3VtzgOyHZ8LlbNfL3VJ6QNgHPMM/edit?usp=sharing
2) Click on the 'File' button
3) Click on 'Make a Copy'
4) Voila! You're done, and it's yours.

This is my first time making one of these and would welcome any feedback, suggestions, or complaints.

Please email me at:

What formats do come with the purchase? Is there a printer-friendly version?

There are 2 pdfs: the "full" version and the digital version; oddly enough the latter is twice the size, and on my system slower to draw each page. Both are tablet-sized at 6" x 9". Neither utilizes layers or such, so it's not printer-friendly.

Is the Fear appendix going to be added to the Core Rule Book PDF as well or is it just going to the Digital version PDF?

The book mentions a Playbook, but the link quoted in the text is dead. How can this Playbook be obtained?

You'll have to scroll down to Kids on Bikes, but they have a ton of goodies, including the ashcan rules, here:

What all is included in this book, I would assume it wouldn't be 60 pages of rules

It's a mini-book. You have everything from a GM guide to the character sheet, all packed into one comic-book sized book. There's some neat tables on pages 56-74 that could be useful even to non-gaming writers. Skimming through those, I was reminded of D'Amato's RPG Character Backstory Guide.

"However, keep in mind that historical accuracy is not an excuse to be horrible. “But this is how people would have talked back then” doesn’t go far when you’ve established boundaries. If paranormal events can happen regularly in the town, then a mining town in the 1950s can be accepting of all people." - Love this!

I've been part of a few games where DM's saw the historical setting as their permission to behave like a-holes to the players. A while ago I would have said that people who get offended by that need to get tougher skin and get over it. Over the years my heart has softened to those who are underrepresented and marginalized. Friends playing at the table should not have to go through the same crap in a fantasy world as they do in the real world. Thanks for addressing this in your core rules and maybe, just maybe, those DM's that I spoke of will read them and take them to heart.

I feel one has to be careful with this as it is essentially whitewashing history, and forgetting the bad aspects of our past can be quite harmful to the future growth of our communities. Imagine playing D&D as an in-character vegan.

The book seems to handle some sensitive subjects much better than most RPGs. That said, there are a few places where I cringed pretty hard while reading--specifically, to name a couple, the phrases "confined to a wheelchair" and “What insanity has this character shown warning signs of?” Wheelchairs are mobility devices--they are freeing to people who use them, and the phrase preferred is usually "person in/using a wheelchair". As for the insanity thing...er...yeah, I really don't know how to explain why that's ableist and awful in a relatively civil and calm way, because it's awful. Replace the word "insanity" with "mental illness" and read it aloud in front of a mixed group of people. If no one cringes, you need to hire more mentally ill writers or something.

Thanks for reading, and please let me know if you want to discuss further or get more information.

Hey Matthew. No need to explain how they're ableist: in looking at those again, you are 100% correct. Early in the process, we were contacted by an early reader with a disability who helped us with the language, but, we just missed those two. We've made a note of that language, on pages 13 and 57, and we'll revise those in subsequent editions. It's absolutely not our intent to promote ableist language. If there are any other problematic terms of phrases that you notice in the rules, please let us know. Thank you for taking the time to let us know, and we're sorry about this.

Just for your information, in the pdf I downloaded, page 23 (pdf page 28) has text that goes behind and under the page number banner making the last half of the second paragraph about backpacks unreadable.

Hey Michael,

Thanks for letting us know. It would appear that a 'older' version of the PDF was what as on DTRPG. We've updated it to the most recent file.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
