More Options for Ironsworn Oracles!

UPDATED: Now includes the original Ironsworn oracles thanks to Shawn's updated license! Also, a spiralbound copy of this 90+ page book is available on other sites. Check my website for details.

This supplement adds two additional tables for every table in the Ironsworn core rulebook effectively tripling your options.  Where normally you would roll your challenge to find oracle results, you now roll your action as well.  The action die results tell you which table to look at as follows:

  • 1-2: Use the original Ironsworn oracle table (now included with Shawn's updated license!)
  • 3-4: Use the first oracle table in the Ironsmith supplement
  • 5-6: Use the second oracle table in the Ironsmith supplement
The expanded oracles in Ironsmith include:
  • Action and Theme (for those sweet verb/noun combos)
  • Locations, Coastal Locations, Location Descriptors
  • Settlement Name and Settlement Trouble
  • Character Role, Disposition, Goal, and Descriptor
  • Names for Ironlanders (human), Elves, Giants, Varou, and Trolls
  • Combat Actions (for deciding how a foe may act)
  • Mystic Backlash (for when magic goes bad)
  • Major Plot Twist
In additon to the expanded oracles, I've included two new oracles:
  • Random NPC Conversation: A d100 table of random topics for NPCs to discuss including everything from family history to specific job skills to gossip about why the leadership should change.  While these topics could lead to significant plot ideas, they are mainly designed to help a GM or player flesh out an NPC.
  • Plot Knowledge an NPC Can Give: These are two d100 tables that you can use to find out what specific plot information an NPC has.  The first table is the type of information they have (the location of, the identity of, the loss of authority of, etc.) and the second table is the topic of that information (an enemy spy, the current setting, a traitor, etc.)  Roll once on each table to build interesting plot connections on the fly!

Using the Expanded Oracles for Other RPGs

First of all, if you're not playing Shawn Tomkin's Ironsworn game, what are you waiting for?!  It's a great game that has all the drivers you need to make excellen fantasy stories with just the right amount of grit.  Plus, Shawn graciously gives it away for free right here on DriveThru!

As great as Ironsworn is, you could also use these oracles for almost any other gritty, fantasy system or setting.  Check out the above list of oracles included in this supplement.  You can use those in almost any game!  So have at it!

Not an Official Ironsworn Product

This is NOT an official Ironsworn product.  This is a fan-made supplement that is only possible through the generous licensing granted by Ironsworn author, Shawn Tomkin.  Thank you, Shawn!

Please Consider Rating, Reviewing and Providing Feedback

I'm a humble math teacher who loves RPGs.  I try to make products that will be useful for other RPG player simply because I love the gaming community.  You can help me to help others by leaving a rating or review.  However, the most useful thing for me is to have you send me feedback on the design so I can make it even better and more useful for everyone.  Thanks for your help!

While I was looking through this awesome resource to Ironsworn I found two possible errors. On both of the Character Goal tables the last two lines overlap. One line ranges from 94-96 and the other ranges from 96-00. On the Random NPC Conversation Topic the last two lines range from 91-95 and 99-00. I swear that I'm not trying to be a pain or nit pick.

Eric thank you for this and the rest of the amazing resources that you have provided to the Ironsworn community. I hope to one day to actually play Ironsworn when I can find the time and get over overthinking the background vow generation.

Are you planning a version for Starforged? I use your stuff for the Ironlands and would welcome a Sci-Fi version.

Yes! I'm anticipating a Starsmith line of products that will mirror all the Ironsmith stuff. However, Shawn has asked that we hold off on creating 3rd party products until he finishes Starforged and gets the licensing worked out. But it's on my radar!

Hi Eric. A year on and I wondered if you had any news on some Starforged items? I have been playing and wishing I had some extra content for playing within civilization. There's plenty of detail for space based encounters and precursor vaults but it would be nice to expand the settlements. An oracle of locations in a Sci-Fi setting like hanger, bar, bank, etc. Also the equivalent of exploring a vault but for things like hacking into somewhere via cyberspace, breaking someone out of jail, etc.

Unfortunately, I squandered my summer learning more coding for SwiftUI and the new day job has been grueling on my time. However, with Starforged now shipping out to backers, I've started in on the project in earnest. I'm half done with the Expanded Oracles and anticipate a release by Christmas. Sorry I haven't made more progress. In the meantime, let me direct you to other fine DTRPG products such as Forge Horizons (for Starforged specifically) at https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/398748/Forge-Horizons and the Book of Random Science Fiction Tables at https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/244529/The-Book-of-Random-Tables-Science-Fiction. The second publisher (dicegeeks) also has other books of random tables including Sci Fi Book 2, Space Fantasy, two Cyperpunk books, Sci Fi Facility Generator, and one with 12 full solar systems. Hopefully, those can tide you over!

Hi Eric. Any time learning to code is never squandered. I will look forward to your stuff when it is ready. I hadn't heard of Forge Horizons and will give it a go. I already have The book of Random Tables Science Fiction and remember being very disappointed. However at a second glance I think some of the tables might be useful but many are too specific. (e.g. Items in a desk). Thank you for your time and good luck with the App development.

This is an interesting supplement to the game and more than simply more oracles. The extension of the main oracle to include "Yes But" and "No But" is inspired, as are the NPC conversation tables. I agree with the earlier review that says the names will be what I use most. I did note the flavour of most of the other oracles slightly shift the Ironlands to a more generic setting. e.g. There are Jungles and Oasis in the locations that would not fit the default setting but would be very helpful in moving to another setting. I also notice occupations that are more typical of the late medieval period than the dark age setting of the Ironlands. e.g. scribe, alchemist, apothecary, etc. As my setting is both further south than the Ironlands and closer to the medieval that dark ages it suits me fine. I recommend it for the conversation tables alone but gladly enjoy the rest.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
