Shape your Ironsworn character and companions by defining their heritage

This set comprises 60 ancestry cards to cover the most variety possible to fit your world. These ancestries are divided into...

  • Primal ancestries (19 cards): Folks commonly found in classic fantasy settings and real mythologies.
  • Beastfolk ancestries (24 cards): Animal relatives.
  • Elemental ancestries (8 cards): Creatures defined by one of the four natural elements they are linked to.
  • Non-humanoid ancestries (9 cards): Your non-anthropoid companions' species.

The ancestry is your character’s heritage, whether physical or cultural. It is not only a means to represent race or ethnicity, but also their customs or upbringing. However, in order to avoid prescription, this material does not offer any worldbuilding or narrative fluff; instead, the most minimal description is given to the ancestry entries.

The premise

Your ancestry answers to what is my nature.

Each one has its own three (3) arrays of stats, one per difficulty or tone of the game:

  • Challenging
  • Perilous (default)
  • Grim

Each ancestry also offers adds to some moves, which are set for a total equivalent of 10 experience. This means that the ancestries replace the three starting asset cards and the character creation process of setting the stat values. Alternatively, you can use an ancestry in addition to the three starting asset cards by using the grim (lower) stat array.

Assigning an ancestry to your companion allows you to use their stats when making a move leveraging on them, which adds a new dimension to the game. Further guidelines are provided on using an ancestry for your followers and how the companion asset card comes into place.

This material provides you with a guide to creating your own ancestries.

HI, Aaron. It is not.

Vaults & Vows has its own way of adding ancestries to the system.

While there are no current plans for a Starforged version, we've ensured that our guide for creating ancestries is mostly compatible for Starforged. There are a couple of Starforged moves missing, though following the guide will help you learn to intuitively fill in those gaps.

I bought this and it looks pretty cool from what I have seen so far.

I did notice on page nine that the description and stats for the Undead are identical to the Reborn. As their stats and abilities are different on the cards this makes me think the undead description might be an accidental duplication of the Reborn description, would that be correct?

Yes. This was indeed an error in the PDF with no cards. It just has been addressed.

Thank you very much for letting me know. Feel free to contact me on any social media platform to provide you with a complimentary copy of our latest product.

So there's a pretty big problem with the formatting of the pdf with the backs included. Namely, if you do print them double sided "Undead" ends up with a "Beastfolk Ancestry" back, consequentially giving "Apefolk" a "Primal Ancestry" back. Similarly, "Vanera" and "Airborn" have swapped backs. Finally, the rest of the "Elemental Ancestries" have "Beastfolk Ancestry" on the back.

Hi Ronald.

Sorry for the inconvenience with the print-and-play document. There was an update months ago that fixed that issue. Did you make sure to download that updated version?

An update has been released to further ensure optimal double-sided printing. The PDF with the backs included had an odd number of pages, which prevented optimal double-sided printing if the document was sent to print from the first page.

If you contact me through any social media, I'll make sure to send you a complimentary copy of the next product currently in development, once released.

Thanks!

I appreciate the quick response, and did download the updated pdf. But the update doesn't address the issue that page 20 of the pdf has six "Beastfolk Ancestry" card backs when it should say "Elemental Ancestry." The page does have three "Non-humanoid Ancestry" card backs with do correspond with the "Arachnid, Canid, and Corvid" cards on the previous page.

I'll send a screencap through Twitter.

Really like these, but may I ask why you haven't you added a orc ancestry?

Hi Søren. Thank you for the purchase.

There are few humanoids ancestries I decided not to cover because they created complications when it came to reflect their traits within the mechanics of the system. According to folklore, trolls became stone under sunlight and their size were usually larger than the average human. I thought it wouldn't be fair to include orcs and ogres but not trolls, given that they are naturally hostile races and have half-breeds cards.

However, the main constraint was space in the layout. I wanted the number of ancestries to be divisible by three so that the print-and-play pages would be space efficient.

Not sure about any of the first couple reasons. I mean, goblins, dark dwarf and dark efl are in it. Which are also usually an evil race.

But I do understand the space constraint though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
