Iconic Maps

Iconic Maps aims to provide quality maps to game companies at an affordable price.  The cost of commissioning unique map art for a publication can sometimes strain the budgets of small publishers.  By instead licensing the rights to use an existing map this cost is significantly reduced.

This Product Includes:

  • 2 high resolution color .jpg versions of the map (one with labels the other without);
  • 2 PDFs (U.S. Letter and A4) containing the two versions of the map each spread over a single page for printing.
  • 1 Commercial License.

Hello Tad,

I love the map, however, I am a bit confused about the license specifics. Based on the statements of the license, this cannot be redistributed or recreated for VTT use(free or otherwise). Please advise, I do want to incorporate it into a Foundry VTT module of my own making, and I'm a bit unsure if I'm allowed or not.

Thank you,
Cris

Hi Christian, my apologies for the late reply, our family has been on holiday. To answer your question, the scope of the license is intended to allow the map to be incorporated within publications, including those that are made specifically for VTT. What is not allowed is for the map to be redistributed as a stand-alone-product for print or VTT (such as say an "add on product" separate from the module). I hope that clears things up for you?

Cheers,
Tad

Hello, is there any chance you can provide a "higher" resolution map JPG (or other graphic file format other than PDF) of the village w/o numbers? I'm looking at possibly using it in a product (i.e. Commercial License), but also to have it blown up to table-size to run at a convention. The 560k JPG file you have is not going to cut it.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. So I created the map at a size that could fit either an A4 or U.S. letter size page (2550x3508px) at full resolution. By lowering the resolution to say the quality of a poster map (150dpi) the image could be blown up to a size of 17"x23.3". I don't know if that is large enough for your purposes but that's probably as large as the image can go within the "acceptable" resolution range.

If you would like I'd be happy to send you an enlarged poster sized image directly. Let me know if this works for you.

Cheers,
Tad

The issue is your higher res file is a PDF. I would like to send this out to be printed very large, and I don't believe they'll accept a PDF. A PNG, JPG, or TIF file would probably be better. When I copy the image out of the PDF and blow up to 400-500% (that is my guess at what size I need) the images are just a bit blurry. I want the printout to consume an entire gaming table. I'm hoping an actual high res file (not a copysave) would be better. If you don't want to put it in the purchase, how can I get my info to you for the file?

Oh I see, the issue seems to be that I mistakenly included low rather than high res versions of the map in the zip file. I'm terribly sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. I've gone ahead and updated the file so as to include the high res images. I can't vouch for how well they will print out at the size you desire them to be, given that they were created at a resolution appropriate for a single page. But I guess there's only one way to find out. I hope the map serves you well.

Cheers,
Tad

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
