FlexAI is an attempt to model and simulate monster and NPC behavior in combat and social encounters.  It scales in complexity from very simple to as complex as you as a GM would like it to be.  It can be used in any tabletop roleplaying game with zero preparation time.

The system takes only a few minutes to learn, is easy and quick to use, and can enhance any tabletop roleplaying combat experience.

This massive resource contains hundreds of detailed scenarios to generate dynamic, contextually-appropriate creature behavior in various combat circumstances.

Over 860 tables, tens of thousands of combinations and permutations, and yet all it takes is a few minutes and a roll of a d100 to imbue you adventures with intelligence and fascination!

I love how this author is using all these charts and criteria to truly simulate an AI monster / NPC experience. To truly have fun in a solo D&D (or other TTRPG), you cannot have all the answers and as DM, you have all the answers, until a product like this comes out. Even before implementing the charts, it is fun to just sit back and read this book and see the various possibilities. This author does a really good job writing books for ALL levels of understanding. He is one of 2 or 3 Solo D&D (and other TTRPG) pioneers out there today and I will endorse any product that makes my game more fun.

Or........a game master could base the personalities of NPCs on the behavior of how real people act in the real world around them......nah, let's use 860 tables.

lol it's overkill for sure. Different GM/DMs use all kinds of inspiration. If you've always had time to prep, and have always found endless inspiration in the world and people around you, that's fantastic!

As with all of my books (and I would argue all RPG books at all), FlexAI is here for you to make of it and draw from it what you will. Sounds like you're more than capable of managing monster and NPC interactions without a reference, and that's stellar.

The Deal of the Day lured me in. This high-road response to a snarky comment convinced to to take a chance. Just based on the sample... even if I never use the table, there's food for thought there.

These are surges (green) and lulls (red). They're described early in the book. Thanks for asking and sorry it took so long for me to see this and get back to you!

God, I'm an absolute tool. In my excitement, I bought the printed book, but didn't grab the PDF version for it as well (same cost). Any chance you could hook a brother up?

On page 263 under Unavailable Choices, it talks about how some DC values are listed as n/a or are absent to denote that the action automatically fails or is not an option. However, unless I missed it, I don't see a single example of that in any of the tables, rendering this section irrelevant.

After many hours, I went through all the tables and found some errors. I didn't look at the DC values as it would've taken much more time and I don't think I would know if they are correct anyway. Please fix the mistakes listed below:

Page 15 table 5, the 17 result is missing.
Page 47 table 49 column D change 100-00 to 00.
Page 52 table 59 column D change 100-00 to 00.
Page 96 table 139 column C change 100-00 to 00.
Page 113 table 172 columns A, B, C and D are all messed up past the AM/Minor Surge results.
Page 149 tabe 241 column D the 00 result is repeated twice: 63-00, 00.
Page 209 table 353 column A the 00 result is repeated twice: 94-00, 00.
Page 222 table 379 column B change 100-00 to 00.
Page 234 table 398 column D change 100-00 to 00.
Page 270 table 456 column A, the entire column is messed up.
Page 276 table 476 header, change Passing By to Combat.
Page 283 table 497 header, change Passing By to Combat.

Is there a greyscale or black-and-white printer-cartridge friendly version of this work? If not, please consider creating such a version. I purchased the Solo Adventuring Toolkit only to realize there's no printer-friendly version.

Hi Harold! Every IGS book comes with a printer/mobile-friendly version of the PDF for free that redacts the parchment background. You should be able to download it alongside the normal version.

Hope that helps!

Hi Mark—Yes, the full FlexAI Guidebook contains over 800 tables portraying every combination of combat and social encounters and roles. The preview should include the table of contents if that helps.

On page 263 under Unavailable Choices it says some DCs list n/a or are missing a DC value. However, as far as I can see this does not occur on any of the Social AI charts. Does this need errata?

Hi Luka--I'm genuinely confused by what you're referencing here. The Guidebook is typically $5-$10, and the hardcopy versions are as cheap as I can make them. Every single IGS product includes the PDF/digital versions of things for free when you order the hardcopy.

Please let me know if I'm missing something in your question...?

Hi Thomas--I don't know for sure, but it's a fairly simple Excel file so I don't see why it wouldn't work with anything that supports Excel. The only weirdness is that it has some protection on it but that doesn't prevent opening the file.

Thomas--To clarify, this product is a PDF book / softcover / hardcover. So it won't work with Excel or Calc or Sheets because it's a PDF file.

What I think you're asking about is the Digital Resource Companion, which is a group of Excel files and to which my comment below regarding compatibility applies:

Hi there, I've been reading through the printer friendly version of this title and noticed that, for every Action table within the Soldier archetype, column C is identical to column D. I assume this is an error, but if not could you please explain the logic?

Cheers.

Hi Dirk--Apologies; just seeing this now. The heuristic used to calculate the variances between combinations of the factors that go into each table may indeed result in some cases where there are few, or no, differences between particular scenarios. That's consistent with the intent and design of the calculations.

Hope that helps! Thanks for reaching out :)

The fact that the very first word after the colophon of this “study in detail” is misspelt (“Foreward”) rubs me not exactly the right way...

Heh, completely fair. I’ve published dozens of books over decades, and literally just learned last month that it should indeed be “Foreword” as you point out.

Rest assured that all IGS books going forward will of course use the correct spelling!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
