"There's Gold in That Thar Penal Settlement!"

Most people would be aware that the early colonial history of Australia included major gold rushes in the 1840s and 1850s. But what few people know is that decades prior to these great discoveries, a discovery of precious gold sent ripples through the very fabric of New South Wales. The find, made by a lowly convict, set greedy imaginations running wild, and inspired not one by two expeditions out into perilous parts of the colony. The only problem was ... the whole thing was a huge hoax, a ploy on the behalf of a brazen convict to secure a trip back to England at the Governor's expense.

Ticket of Leave #7 is a double-size supplement which takes this little-known piece of real-world history and riffs on it in classic Lovecraftian fashion. Instead of merely being a greedy opportunist, it asks, what if the mendacious convicts was a devotee of a foul alien god? Or in thrall to an extra-dimensional thing that exists only as an uncanny flicker of light? Or the accidental vehicle for a confrontation between newly arrived colonists and a horror that has slept in the Australian landscape for thousands of years?

This system-independent PDF provides historical details about the gold hoax, and describes the kinds of threats that will confront any expedition sent out to validate the wild claims of a discovery in a remote corner of the colony. This PDF is rounded out with three different Lovecraftian style horrors that could be behind the plot, each providing Keepers with a different style of investigation and chilling resolution.

Tickets-of-Leave are small self-contained additions to the Convicts & Cthulhu setting for Lovecraftian roleplaying in the early penal colonies of Australia. Each includes a selection of game elements which can either be used collectively as a thumbnail sketch of a mini-scenario, or can be used in isolation to provide pieces that enhance a scenario of your own invention.

This is not a standalone product, but relies upon the Convicts & Cthulhu setting also published by Cthulhu Reborn. The Convicts & Cthulhu core book is a lavishly illustrated 96-page sourcebook available in both PDF and print as a "Pay-What-You-Want" title.

Convicts & Cthulhu is designed to allow Call of Cthulhu Keepers and players to run scenarios and campaigns set in the penal colonies of early Australia. It particularly targets the historical period from 1795 to 1810.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
