Adventurers Going Into the Well

Harper’s Tale is the final result of a successful fundraiser for Friends of Kids with Cancer. We raised over $10k for the organization and printed 165 books for them to distribute to kids and families fighting cancer. The DriveThruRPG product is owned by my daughter, Harper, whose vision helped bring this book to life. She’s planning to use the royalties for an international trip after we ring the bell in 2021 to celebrate her beating leukemia!

Young Girl With a Glowing Circlet on her forehead                     A Dirty But Loved Doll

Harper’s Tale is a forest-based adventure path of 10 connected adventures culminating in the party, now 10th level, confronting the source of the plague within their home land. The adventure is intended for players as young as 10, but I promise players of all ages will find plenty to keep them engaged with the story.

The adventure path starts in the Village of Grove as the heroes come to a seemingly deserted village. Through exploration and investigation, they learn that a mysterious illness has taken over the town, leaving only two young women, Rose and Grace, to care for the populace.

Their investigations take them under the town, and, in learning the source of the illness, they find themselves drawn into a much bigger plot by a mysterious force they know little about. What is clear is that the forest they call home is in danger, and the entity behind the illness of Grove has only just begun its foul machinations as evidenced by a sudden outbreak of madness in a neighboring town.

A second outbreak is staved off by the heroes—surely they are best described as such after saving not one but two villages—and they find themselves traveling to see the arch-druid of the forest, Deng. The journey is arduous, but the clever adventurers comport themselves well, and learn much in their audience with the ancient druid, including the ingredients for fashioning a cure for the otherworldly contagion and, more importantly, the appropriate rites for harvesting the key components.

Prof Piewright's Wonderful Wagon

Harvesting the cure is a greater challenge than the adventurers anticipated as they must deal with a cold war between the hidden powers of the forest in addition to gathering the ingredients in the dark recesses of the primordial wood.

Standing Stones Shocking a Hero

The adventure culminates in a confrontation with the creature whose machinations have been behind the debilitating disease wracking the forest. The heroes have learned much of their enemy, but have they learned all there is to know? How will they react when confronted with the source of so much pain and sorrow? Can it be defeated? Redeemed? Or will it win the day? There’s only one way to find out.

My group (ages 10, 10, 13, 17, 34, and 44) has starting this campaign. We are half way through “Welcome to Grove” and I've got some questions as I prep for running the campaign--

* What happened to Arpistis? The first nine adventures address her being kidnapped by E'thor yet there's no mention of her in tenth module. (Well, there's a nameless dryad trapped as a tree in the random encounters table of the final adventure, but surely that's not her.)

* I’m confused by purpose of the cure for which the party quests for the ingredients. In different locations in the campaign it is described or implied to be a cure for Gwynn, for the citizens of Grove and Prince’s Harbor, for the Chranc magical disease (which afflicted Arpitis and E’thor and maybe others…?), and for E’thor’s husband Sir Telynor. If it is either of the later two, then why do E’thor’s minions have two of the three ingredients for the cure? I’m just having problems following the logical thread of what...See more

First off, thank you for the support! I hope you all like it!

Re. Arpistis - I'm my game that is Arpistis (and I should have made that more clear in the AP) and is there so that DMs can bring her in (or not) at their discretion based on their party's interest in her. In retrospect, a sidebar and/or specific encounter should have been placed there.

Re. The cures that the PCs discover in the early stages of the AP are actually "curing" the side effects of the experiments that E'thor is using to gather information and devise his own cure for his husband. This is another thing I should have made a lot more clear. I've been a pharmacist for two decades and made too many assumptions regarding common knowledge for how drugs are created and tested, namely that safety testing happens well before efficacy testing. I hope that helped some. Feel free to ask more questions here or Twitter.

I ran the whole thing as a Humblewood adventure. I feel like because the whole thing is a collection of adventures from multiple creators, Arpistis kind of fell through the cracks, to be replaced with a new person to be rescued from the bad guy. I set it up so that Arpistis, EThor and The Mavka were childhood friends who had... a falling out when Mavka was infected by the disease and went evil (an unspecified number of years ago). I set up Ethor as one who was behind all the shenanigans, because he was desperate to save Arpistis from the sickness. There was also a bit of lovetriangle thing happening with the three friends. Furthermore, I made Arpistis the daughter of Old Druid Deng.

I love the whole thing, from the diverse adventures, the atmosphere to all the wonderful artworks! I'm getting ready to play it with my kids (age 17, 14 and 9) and I think it will work wonderfully. I'll post a review after we've played some.

One thing though... It might be too much of a hassle, but I was wondering if it would be at all possible for you to upload a printer-friendly version as well?
Living on the other side of everything (NZ) it costs quite a lot to have a soft-/hardcover sent here, therefore printing it out.

Umm... Also: You guys working on another, similar, adventure path? 'Cause I would buy that too in a heartbeat! :)

Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you like it! The lack of a printer-friendly option was my gap. I forgot to mention it to my layout person. Can you find me on Twitter (my name is my twitter handle) and I'll send you a coupon for an at-cost printing if you like? Will that help?

As far as another AP like this one, there are no plans in the future but never say never :)

I am so excited for this!!! It goes straight to my heart. Saw the post from Matt (I follow you on Twitter) and immediately came here to get it since it's sold out (happy) from their inventory!
We lost my mom to leukimia last year after a year of fighting, so anything I can do to help and promote and elevate for this cause is very much welcomed!!!

Absolutely love it! We have just finished part three of the story, running with my three sons who are 20, 20 and 17, we love it. The NPC's are a treat and the storyline can be a little on the railroad side for an experienced group but my guys really do like it.

If I could go back in time and tell myself anything, it would be to keep going, because there's a little girl like me doing big, beautiful, and amazing things.

I am delighted by this volume, and if I can financially manage it in the future, will be purchasing the physical copy. We're going to run this as a family, and I couldn't be more excited.

I wrote this for my blog at http://worlds-in-conflict.blogspot.com/2019/09/first-thoughts-harpers-tale.html during the run up to release. As it sits right now I've only really had a chance to absorb the first chapter but I look forward to going through the entire book this weekend!

Harper's Tale is a 10 chapter D&D adventure co-created by Matt Corley and his daughter Harper with the goal of benefiting Friends Of Kids With Cancer. Please check out their crowdfunding page at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/harper-s-tale-an-adventure-path-for-dnd-5e#/ for full details and the story behind the adventure's creation. After reading Harper's story I was ready to back the project regardless but after looking at the art, and since then getting a backer's copy of the first chapter of the adventure I'm blown away by how great this project looks and I can't wait to start running it.

The first chapter 'Welcome To Grove' starts with the PCs investigating an abandoned town and mixing a combination...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
