Terror! Suspense! You will not believe the dangers in store for your intrepid heroes! Will they discover ancient secrets, lost civilizations, or priceless treasure? Will they escape treacherous villains, evil super powers, or deathly traps?

Temples & Tombs is a roleplaying game devoted to creating the fast-paced adventures popularized in pulp magazines that led to films like Raiders of the Lost ArkThe Mummy (1999), and Romancing the Stone

Built on the Year Zero Engine system, the framework that drives Free League's games such as Tales from the Loop and Mutant Year ZeroTemples & Tombs is adapted to fit the two-fisted adventure pulp genre in several key ways.

  • Custom skills and talents engineered for a fast-paced and adventurous setting
  • Luck mechanic that provides more dice for added chances of success, but with a chance to "run out of luck"
  • Hero mechanic for additional chances to succeed
  • Condition-based consequences so that heroes never die (but may be on the run)
  • A scene structure that helps guide play to emulate your favorite action/adventure story

Beyond that, the game looks and feels like you'd expect YZ0 to feel. And if you've never played in this system, you're in for a treat. Very easy learning curve, fast-paced game play, and just enough crunch to keep things interesting.

a multi-genre, award-winning, best-selling, easy to learn, easy to teach, and easy to play gaming system!

I had forgot I backed this! Will be my first YZ0 game. Probably try to run it solo first to get my feet under the rules. Love the theme and excited to get this to table. Really love the adventure creation section! So many fun options there. :D

One minor Oops I caught, that, if fixed would make my job of convincing and teaching it a little easier when I pass them the reference sheet: On the first page of ref sheet file, only lists 3 Stats … WIT and sub stats are MIA. Could that be updated?

Where can I find the character sheet? I bought the hardcover from a local game store...

I had a hard time understanding how the Luck mechanic worked. Could anyone please let me know if I summarized it correctly?

The characters start out with 0 Luck dice in their pool. The first time they invoke a Luck check, they tick off one of the boxes on the character sheet and roll one Luck die. The next time they invoke Luck, they tick off another box, then roll two Luck dice, and so on, to a maximum of 5 dice. If at any point they roll a "1" they fail their Luck check and incur a Catch and the Luck Pool is cleared out and they start over.

Thank you for correcting and clarifying.

I have a mechanical question about armor. I haven't played any Year Zero games before, so please forgive me if this is an ignorant question.

If I'm reading it right, in combat if you are trying to hit a character wearing a bulletproof vest, you need to achieve 5+ sixes with your die pool. Is that right? That seems like quite a Herculean task (15 dice to have a 50% shot).

Thanks in advance for the clarification!

PS: Reading through some of the threats, it looks like the stats for Cloaks and Daggers, the stats for Special Agents and Analysts and Technicians may be flipped.

Yes, you are right. Armor reduces the number of successes. It would in general be easier to aim for unprotected areas which would results in fewer dice to roll, but then you only need one success.

I do not own this ruleset, however, in most other Year Zero Engine games, the rule for armor is: The effect of armor is determined by its armor rating. When you suffer damage from a physical attack, roll a number of base dice equal to the armor rating. Every success you roll decreases the damage by one.

Will there be further adventures written for this product? And if so, when do you think that we can expect to see them?

Hi, I have a hard copy of this rulebook via the KS and I have a couple of questions...

pg.9-Character Sheets: To track your character and their progress, you’ll
need a character sheet found at the end of this book.

? So I cannot see a char sheet anywhere in the book, is it me?

pg.51-Push Your Luck
The additional Luck Dice are *always* added to the pool until you can /Take a Break/ or until you run out of Luck
(*my emphasis*)

? Not sure where /Take a Break/ is defined?

? Not sure how to read this sentence overall, as in does this mean that once you /Push your luck/ the resulting dice stay in your pool? What happens when you /push your luck/ again? Do you get more dice? What forces you to "run out of Luck" if the dice are *always* in your pool once you push your luck?

Hi Paul! Clarifications below:

-Character sheets are provided digitally with your DTRPG purchase, they aren't in the book. Let me know if you need one I'll send it!
-Take a break in this context is resting overnight (or in between sessions typically). This is different than taking a quick break to clear a catch, which means doing nothing during your combat round.
-Whenever you Push Your Luck (reroll the dice) you add a Luck Die to the pool. That continues until one of your luck dice rolls "1" then you are "out of luck" and take a catch and clear your luck tracker. This is a reskin of the Alien stress mechanic if you want to see it in other applications.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Christopher, I've found the char sheet download.
I think I still need to get my head around Luck but I have access to the core book for Alien so I'll take a look at the stress mechanic and see if that helps. If not I'll come back here if that's okay.

I'll try a brief example (maybe that'll help):

So I'm running from a dinosaur and botch my stunt roll as I jump over a chasm (let's say it's 4 dice). I decide to push my luck and add one luck die to the pool of 4 and reroll and I got a success, yay!

Now I have 1 Luck Die on my tracker. The next time I need to make a roll is because I'm trying to punch a T-Rex (long story). So I roll my fight which is 3 dice. But I also have to include my luck die. I don't get any successes so I decide to push my luck again, now I have two luck dice (tracker at two) and I reroll my 3 plus two luck dice. Success! Whee!

Okay next I'm trying to pull my friend from the T-Rex's mouth. So this is a feat. Let's say we have 2. So you roll your 2 dice plus 2 luck dice. This time you get a 1 on one of the luck dice so that means you are out of luck. You immediately take a catch and clear your tracker (so you won't use the luck dice anymore unless you push your luck again).

You can be out...See more

Thanks, that helps, and matches what I read last night in the Stress rules for Alien. I think that was a little more obvious since I think of Stress building (increasing) whereas I tend to think of Luck running out (decreasing). So the rule works fine but I was just not getting that the number of dice increased and didn't reset after the push. Mostly I was reading "your current luck" as the number of unticked boxes (since in my head you "use up" your Luck). Now I understand the Stress rule and that "your current luck" increases it all makes sense.

I would say that, with the exception of struggling with this mechanic, your book has really helped me to understand the M:Y0 system much better than I did after reading Forbidden Lands, or my more brief skim of Alien. I think there is so much chrome in those, particularly the latter, that it's a bit hard to see where the system is "coming from". T&Tbs made that much clearer for me, thank you for that.

Hi Christopher,
Wanted to reply here to make sure it went directly to you. Will there be additional adventures coming out or do you know if any on DrivethruRPG now? the search is being very limited.
I backed this on KS and I am getting ready to run my kids through one of the adventures in the book this week during holiday break. Was hoping that there may be more out there while I get a feel for making my own with the YZ format.
Thanks for this wonderful homage to a certain fedora wearing Doc.

I can't write full reviews because I use DTRPG to print cards, and they want to avoid the risk of publishers poo-pooing on publishers. So this isn't a review. Not at all. This is just me casually mentioning that Temples & Tombs is a pretty clever adaptation of the Year Zero Engine.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
