Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition

Selected Option:

The world is a Lie.

Humanity is cursed into a prison of Sleep, ignorant of the wonder and danger all around them. Ground down into slavery to masters they’ll never see, beset by a plague of cares to distract them from the Truth.

Magic.

You were like them, once, but now you are Awakened. You see the world beneath the Lie’s skin, and the Mysteries beckoning you into the shadows. Every day of your life, you hear the call of the supernatural, from the least ghost to the deepest cosmic enigmas.

You are a mage, one of the Wise. You see, know, and explore what others can’t imagine, from the depths of the human soul to the hidden corners of reality. Armed with your spells, driven by an addiction to Mysteries, you delve into the secrets of the world. Knowledge has a price, and the dangers are many.

This book contains:

  • The complete guide to playing a mage in the Chronicles of Darkness.
  • Reimagined Paths, Orders, and powers to create your Awakened characters and their allies, including an updated version of the most comprehensive free-form magic system in gaming.
  • Five example settings across the world, from Los Angeles to Salamanca, each with a central Mystery.
  • A brand-new look at all the strange places of the Fallen World, from the Lower Depths to the Emanation Realms, and what mages might find within.

Also available for Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition:

Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition Condition and Numina CardsPart of the new Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition rules, Conditions add an additional layer of consequence and reward to certain actions in the Chronicles of Darkness.

The Fallen World Chronicle Anthology - Contains 12 short stories (8 original to this collection) of magic and mystery, in celebration of the second edition of Mage: The Awakening.

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a thinner paper stock than Premium Color, basically the same paper as the Black & White books. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process. Examples of pages: Premium Color vs. Standard Color.

Is it worth it paying the extra $35 for the premium colour book compared to the standard colour book? Also can you get the book shipped to the UK?

How easy is this to play? Can I run it with a group of newcomers or does everyone need a detailed knowledge of the spellcasting system to make it work? How much of the metaplot does everyone need to know to play?

not a lot of metaplot, the chronicles of darkness doesn't have the history and lore of World of darkness, but at least one person familiar with the spellcasting system will make things much easier. It's freeform spell casting is its feature, but at a cost of a bit of a learning curve.

there is a 2 page spellcasting guide available PWYW that condenses and explains the whole process well and will shorten and make the process exponentially easier

Well it seemed to me that WoD 2 setting needed a séparated rulebook.

That was the first edition. 2e comes with the rules included in each, so they can stand alone.

What's the difference between this and Mage: The Ascension? I'd like to play the latest of the Mage games, but as someone brand new to these books I don't know what I should be buying.

The systems are a little different, this one will be more coherent where M20 is more complex and requires a lot more work to get going.

Are the previous supplements outdated by this 2nd edition? I know that the Atlantean theme in the 1st edition has been cut off and replaced by a symbolic golden era of mages, so it is a sort of reboot?

From what I read, yes it is a reboot. However, it still remains compatible if you take the 1st edition writings of Atlantis as taking at face value something that is not objective truth in the 2nd. I think you can pretty much use all the old material still, its just the backstory is kept more of a mystery.

I agree with this, actually. I prefer the soft back POD books, because the covers aren’t as oversized. If a premium quality, soft back book book was released, I’d buy it.

Hardcover, Standard Color Book

Pros:

*I ordered the, "Hardcover, Standard Color Book" last week and it came quick fast and in a hurry (even during the Corona Pandemic).

* The 'Hard Cover' portion is sturdy.

* I have it! Woo Woo!

Cons:

* The spine of the book (pages) is not actually attached to the 'Hard Cover' itself. The only thing attaching the 'meaty portion' or pages of the book is the first and last page is glued onto the spine.

While this may be fine on the outset, as we all know, our beloved gaming books get used hard and I can divine that after a short while the book will become rather flimsy. Will be figuring out a way to 'glue' the spine of the book to the 'Hard Cover' portion of the book.

* Aesthetically, all of the color is extremely muted or faded which, at first blush, is not much of a problem except the backdrop color of the pages is a light baby blue.

Since the text...See more

My friend, for your peace of mind, hardcover books are usually not glued to the spine, just by the endpapers. Some hardbacks give the appearance of being glued, but it's because the are just holded tight to the spine. So, nothing to worry about.
Attentively, a hobbyst bookbinder.

This retired librarian agrees with you. A well bound book's spine cover should be loose and flexible. It should create a tunnel between it and the material to which the pages are attached. Mass market books in which the pages are glued directly to the spine cover will eventually fall apart when flexed too often.

I received my Premium copy of this game. It is not the same quality as Onyx path books at all. Matt pages. Not glossy. The spine is very low quality and the top of the spine is damaged a bit. I am not impressed at all for paying an additional $20.00. The earlier explanation of the quality in the post by Misha B Dec 5, 2016 8:22 am CST "while Premium Heavyweight is EXACTLY like WW/OPP's original print runs (gloss pages, smooth, heavy pages with perfect colour saturation, really high quality)." leads me to think I was sent the standard print not the Premium...

POD is no where near the same quality, especially with the spine. I have ordered the premium heavyweight and compared it to the offset printing that Onyx Path does for their KS. POD cannot compare to that quality. I would disagree with Mischa B's comment and feel that Bartosz W comment is more accurate.

That being said, I have been happy with my purchase. If there are not too many pages (i.e. Vampire or Wraith 20), the spine does hold up to regular use. My only wish is that DriveThru would only use better packaging as so many of my books arrive with dings and dents.

But seriously I want a book with some updated Legacies. I'm dying over here for something official that isn't just The Eleventh Question - like, at least put out a few 4- or 5-page PDF teasers, at like $2 each, and then for each Legacy that appears in your Legacies book, give a little discount (like $2.01? Idk).

Just throw us a bone here, man! Even like four more would give me a better idea of how to design my own so I'm not totally beholden to your slow-as-cold-molasses publishing rate. :P

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
